Lambert off to a flying start

Bermuda tennis player Jacklyn Lambert made the perfect start to her Commonwealth Games campaign by thrashing Jalia Nanfuka, of Uganda, 6-0, 6-1 in the women's singles yesterday, the first day of competition following Sunday's opening ceremony.

Lambert was the only member of Bermuda's tennis team to win in Delhi, India, with both Gavin Manders and David Thomas losing.

The Island's top player, Manders, crashed out of the men's singles with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to seeded Australian Greg Jones.

Manders said: "(Jones) was better prepared, more trained. He's played more matches."

Jones said he was relieved to open up with a win. "It's always good to win and get the first one under my belt. In the second set, he made a couple of good passes to break me."

Bermuda's mixed doubles team of Tara Lambert and David Thomas were up against Anna Smith and Ross Hutchins, of England. The Islanders lost the first set 6-1 but no further scores were available last night.

Thomas lost his singles game to Amresh Jayawickrme, of Sri Lanka, 6-1, 6-2. Tara Lambert takes on Heather Watson of Guernsey today.

Meanwhile, Bermuda squash player Nick Kyme is due to play Zambia's Kelvin Ndhlovu in the consolation round today after losing yesterday.

He went down 11-5, 11-0, 11-2 to top Scottish player Alan Clyne.

"At the beginning I was fine, but after the first ten points I was done. He's a fitness nut. It was a long match, but the score was poor," said Kyme.

Also in action this week will be Bermuda swimmers Kiera Aitken, Roy-Allan Burch and Nick Thomson and shooters Ross Roberts, Sinclair Raynor, Carl Reid and Nelson Simons.

Long-jumper Tyrone Smith and sprinter Tre Houston will be the last of the Island squad to take part in the Games, late this week.
