LETTERS FROM THE PREMIER

The following letters of congratulations have been sent by Premier Dr. Ewart Brown to three Island sporting organisations which have enjoyed success over the past month – the men's tennis team who were promoted to the third division in the Americas group of the Davis Cup, the athletes who won six medals at the Carifta Games and Bermuda's swimmers who collected 12 medals at the Carifta Swimming Championships.

The letters were sent to Davis Cup captain Steve Bean, Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson, and swim coach and aquatics manager Ben Smith, and copied to The Royal Gazette:

Dear Mr. Bean,

I write enthusiastically to congratulate you and the Bermuda Davis Cup team on your promotion to the next round of the Davis Cup competition. From all accounts, our team performed admirably in El Salvador and now they have this fantastic result to show for it.

I know you will not let our tennis stars become satisfied with this achievement. I trust you can keep them working hard and hungry for more international acclaim on the world stage as they proudly represent their country.

Good luck in the next round and please pass along my best wishes to the rest of the team. You have me, my Government colleagues and all of Bermuda supporting your team's efforts. Godspeed, and once again, well done!

Dear Ms Watson,

I think it is well known that Track and Field is close to my heart. So on behalf of the people and the Government of Bermuda it is my distinct pleasure to congratulate the team of athletes to recently represent Bermuda in the 2009 Carifta Games.

When I reviewed the results I was thrilled to see that so many of our athletes medalled or achieved personal bests. That is such an encouraging sign for the futures of these young people.

I had hoped to host all the Carifta athletes at a Camden reception, but as I understand it, the schedules of hard-training athletes and the schedule of a Premier leave little time for such luxuries.

Nonetheless, please let them know I uniquely understand the commitment and patience it requires to be a track athlete of this calibre. They have my 100 percent support.

Congratulations once again to not only the athletes but to their coaches and families as well.

Dear Mr. Smith,

The results of Bermuda swimmers at the 2009 Carifta Games are nothing short of outstanding. The number of medals and records speaks so highly of not only the talent of our swimmers but the quality of their coaching and training.

On behalf of the people and the Government of Bermuda please pass along my sincere congratulations to the athletes, the coaches and all the other people who played a role in this true success story.

I had hoped to host all the Carifta athletes at a Camden reception to offer my congratulations in person, but as I understand it, the schedules of hard-training athletes and the schedule of a Premier leave little time for such luxuries.

Nonetheless, please convey my best wishes. May there be even more success in the near future.
