Marshall claims 5K title in some style
Lamont Marshall won the Crime Stoppers 5K Road Race in style yesterday, achieving an eye-catching sub-15 minute time for the sixth time in his career.
In Bermuda, very few runners have ducked under 15 minutes for the 3.1-mile distance. When Marshall crossed the finish line in 14 minutes and 58 seconds it was the third time he had achieved the top standard on home soil.
The Devonshire athlete currently holds the national 5K record on a point-to-point course with a time of 14.50, which he set in 2008 in Gloucester, New Jersey.
In yesterday's run the 26-year-old blazed away from the field of more than 200 runners as he clocked a 4.28 opening mile.
His coach and father, Larry Marshall Sr, said: "We are really pleased, especially as this was a developmental race – not one that he was tapering down for."
His pre-race instruction to his son was to run a fast first mile, which he thought would be in the high 4.30s or 4.40. It was noticeably quicker, reflecting the benefits of recent track sessions. Marshall's second and third miles were 4.56 and 5.04 respectively.
"We're definitely pleased that he managed to go under the 15-minute barrier and to have gone out at such a blistering pace."
Marshall is gearing up to compete in a five-mile road race in Virginia in the middle of November. It is a race that is regularly won by athletes achieving times in the 22- to 23-minute bracket.
In yesterday's Crime Stoppers event Jennifer Alen added to her recent Partner Re title as she came home first out of the women and 15th overall in 19.07.
The quality of the race was –illustrated by seven runners, –including Marshall, breaking 18 minutes.
In the men's race Chayce Smith was runner-up in 15.36, with triathlon specialist Evan Naude third in 16.24.
