Marshall snubbed for top award

Despite guiding Young Men's Social Club to a successful defence of their Premier Division and Central Counties titles last summer veteran batsman Charlie Marshall has been snubbed for Bermuda Cricket Board's (BCB) coveted Coach of the Year Award.

That Social Club enjoyed yet another winning season owed much to former Bermuda skipper Marshall whose 686 runs topped the Premier Division charts.

The St. George's Cup Match star also cracked last season's highest individual score of 153 achieved in a 124 run win over Somerset Cricket Club at Devonshire Recreation Club last June.

Even at the seasoned age of 47 Marshall continues to outshine his younger counterparts and his 1,282 runs, at an average of 35.61, are the most scored in the 107-year history of Cup Match.

Marshall averaged an impressive 85.75 in league play this season but was forced to play second fiddle to team-mate Jeffrey Tyrell who had a Premier-best 118.5.

Fittingly, Tyrell was chosen as Premier Division MVP for his superb prowess with the bat this past season.

The BCB announced yesterday Cleveland County player/coach Clay Smith had been chosen for this year's Coach of the Year Award.

Cleveland placed fourth in the Premier Division last season and made a mess of a bid to wrest the coveted Eastern Counties from St. David's after pushing the champions to the brink of defeat in the final.

In 2005 Marshall was omitted from the senior national squad following an argument with then skipper Smith.

The Board have scheduled their annual prize presentation for November 15 at Warwick Workman's Club, beginning at 7 p.m.
