More girls groups added to Kappa kids tournament

Local fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, have added more girls' age categories to their 11th annual Pee Wee football tournament to be held at the National Sports Centre (NSC) North Field this weekend.

Age groups for Under-10 and Under-12 girls will be included alongside the Under-14 girls to make a full complement of female categories.

The main tournament kicks off at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the preliminary round for the girls beginning tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Reigning champions in the boys Under-8, Under-10 and Under-12 groups – Somerset Trojans, Hamilton Parish, and North Village respectively – will all be back to defend their crowns while girls Under-14 champions, PHC, will also be back.

In total, 60 teams will be competing in the tournament with 16 sides in each of the boys' divisions, while four teams will play in the girls' groups.

For the first time Saltus have entered both the boys' and girls' divisions with coaching guru Andrew Bascome at the helm of the boys' Under-12 team.

The Paget Titans will also be making their debut in the tournament in all three boys' divisions.

Kappa member Jamal Hart said he hoped plenty of spectators would come out and enjoy the action.

"We are hoping that it will once again be another successful tournament for all the youth that participate and for those that come out to cheer them on," said Hart. "As always the emphasis is on the youth and their development.

"Through sports we can eradicate lots of the social ills that are plaguing our community but we must keep them focused and committed at a very young age.

"The Brothers of the Bermuda Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi would like to thank all of our title sponsors as without them this event would not be the success that it is . . . all of our volunteers, referees, In the Pocket Caterers, Big B security, the Bermuda Police Service, PRIDE, the maintenance crew at the NSC, the Dept. of Youth and Sports, our food and entertainment vendors."
