Motorcycle racers back on track

Follow the leader: Earl Bradshaw, Ed Cook and Chris Alves compete in the second heat of the Formula Class during Sunday's racing at the Clearwater track.

On the road again . . . that was the case for Bermuda Motorcylce Racing Club (BMRC) riders as they resumed their season over the weekend just one month after the tragic death of promising teenager Toriano Wilson who was killed in an accident on the track at the Red Bull AMA US Rookies Cup at the Virginia International Raceway.

Having cancelled their last race day because of Wilson's fatal crash, local riders returned to the Southside circuit.

With each class running three races to get back up to speed with the schedule, some took it upon themselves to show why they are considered the best on the Island – none more so than Shae Darrell (Mini Bike Open), Ed Cook (Scooter Class), Taznae Fubler (Mini Bike jr), and Billy Dunn (Formula Class), all of whom won all three of their races in the respective divisions, increasing the points advantage they already held.

Also victorious in Sunday's racing were Paul DeCouto, Markeem Simmons, Wytiko Showers, Keanu Wilson, Bruce DeGrilla jr, Shannon Caisey and Andrew DeCosta,

DeCouto, spokesman for the BMRC, said it was pleasing to see so many arriving at the track and supporting the sport after the recent tragedy.

"The weekend was a great event," said DeCouto. "We didn't have any crashes or major injuries so we were relatively pleased with what took place.

"There was some tight racing in all of the races as we combined a few categories for whatever reason and the attendance was fantastic.

"There are two race days left in the season, so anything can happen and a few of the categories are still very tight.

"We missed a race after Toriano's passing so we made up for the races not run and are back on course.

"There weren't any overall category winners crowned, but a few racers came out with a bigger margin than when they went in. But it is going to be a race to the finish for some of the categories.

"Our grand finale for the season will be on the 21st of October."

Also coming up on the BMRC calendar is a special 'Teach Thaao how to Ride' event on the next race day on October 5, which will see some of the riders putting HOTT 107.5 radio broadcaster Thaao Dill through his paces on a motorcycle.

Dill has no previous experience on a motorcycle of any sort, something that DeCouto wants to change.

"We have invited Thaao to come down and get on a bike as they (HOTT) are sponsoring the event. So it will be a sight to see. It will be his first time riding a bike, and he has never even ridden a bicycle before so it should be a fun-filled day.

"We are looking forward to people coming back out and supporting us and enjoying a day at the race track."
