MP Tucker slams ECCA

Politician Darius Tucker said last night it was "a disgrace to cricket in this country" that Saturday's Eastern Counties game between St. David's and Bailey's Bay was not played on Saturday.

The independent MP raised the issue of St. David's pulling out of the 2010 competition in the House of Assembly and referred to complaints about Eastern Counties Cricket Association not holding an annual general meeting for a decade.

Tucker told MPs during the motion to adjourn debate that he couldn't understand how sporting bodies could be allowed to go for 10 years without an AGM and said it was "disturbing" that it was causing clubs to not want to play.

"The Eastern Counties is now 108 years old so when we consider that a team is going to boycott a cricket game with all the history and fanfare – some people say it rivals Cup Match – I would say that game not played on Saturday was a disgrace to cricket in this country.

"We cannot have cricket constantly being disturbed because of bad management practices."

The Hamilton South MP went on to talk about Cup Match, saying the issue of liquor sales had "gone a bit too far" because 441 Productions has been allowed to monopolise such sales at Somerset Cricket Club.

"The prices they are offering up there are more expensive than various other entities out there in the public arena. It's not fair to the general public."
