MR Onions edge ahead in title race
The Commercial A league continues to be a three horse race with reigning champs MR Onions regaining top spot after challengers Robin Hood and BAA could only manager a draw.
Onions beat fourth-placed Lobster Pot at St David's 3-1. After a tight opening period MRs striker Darragh O'Donoghue forced an excellent save from Pot 'keeper Brian Ward, before Onions took the lead thanks a close range Dave Martin header following excellent wing play from Ben Readdy.
The Onions extended their lead in the second half courtesy of a fine O'Donoghue strike, lashing home from the edge of the box after controlling a wayward ball.
This seemed to spur the Pot into action as they began to control possession and exert pressure on the Onions back line, and it was no surprise when Shohaib Al Mehran pulled a goal back.
The momentum was now with the visitors, but they could not covert the pressure into a second goal, and instead Eoghan O'Dwyer added a third for the Onions to effectively seal the game, his deflected free-kick flying past Ward after the 'keeper had been penalised for handling outside the box.
Meanwhile Robin Hood and BAA started tentatively, showing rustiness from the Christmas break. BAA settled first and created two half chances with Wayne Clapham and Pete Coleman going close.
However somewhat against the run of play the Hood opened the scoring when BAA keeper Tony Ward fumbled a cross and Brian Fubler poked the ball into the empty net. The Hood were now in the ascendancy and Steve Simons missed a great chance to double their lead when he blazed over from six yards just before half time.
The second half saw BAA come back into the game and after 55 minutes Ollie Labett headed home a Pete Coleman free-kick to level the scores. Both teams now fancied the chances and the tackles were flying in, but the referee did an excellent job to keep tempers intact. BAA missing an easy late chance that could have taken all three points.
Tuff Dogs beat Dandy Town Roots 5-2 with Aaron Brown and Ian Mullings grabbing two apiece and Carlos Moniz also notching. Antoine Lightbourn and Devon Binns were on target for Dandy Town Roots.
Prospect/Fire started 2009 like the spent most of the first half of the season with another hammering.
This time they went down 8-2 to PHC with Keith Bell and Quincy Hunt getting a pair each and Kyle Lightbourne, Craig Chrichlow, Aloe Furbert and Sheridan Ming also piling in. North Village Rams and Key West Rangers drew 0-0.
In the B Division Group 1 St. George' All-stars crushed Boulevard 7-0. Stevie Dickinson grabbed a hat-trick followed by two quality strikes by veteran Calvin Rayner and single tallies each by brothers William 'Apples' Richardson and Andrew 'Bunk' Richardson.
Meanwhile Vasco beat Valley 4-1. After going down 1-0 in the first two minutes to a Sinclair Vickers goal, Vasco eventually settled and equalised through Richard Correia. After the break, Vasco took control with further goals from Stephan Teleman, Vaughn Davis and Ross Nottingham.
Hamilton Parish Workmen's club pummeled Somerset Bridge 7-3. Irving Burgess got a hat-trick, Sean Dill got two, while Parish also notched through a Clinton Butterfield effort and an own goal. Ruffins Hill, Eddie Calander and Antoine Green were on target for Bridge.
In the Commercial B Group Two runaway leaders Somerset Extros picked up another walk-over win - this time against Devonshire All-Stars.
Second-placed MR Onions Real Men went down 2-1 to Pest Control. Jamie Matthew sped away to score after Onions failed to clear their lines.
It was one-way traffic in the second-half as Onions pressed for equaliser which finally came with a close-range Greg Ryman-Lipinski finish. However a long-range Troy Crockwell effort clinched victory for Pest Control.
Devonshire Rec Lions beat Wolves 4-1. Worrel Bean got two goals, Leo Richardson and Carlos Smith got one each while Daniel Stovell replied for Wolves.
