National squad prepare to meet Swedish champs

A new-look national squad, containing some new and recalled players, is being put together for the planned visit next month of a top Swedish team.

And there is also a possibility that the Danish Under-21 side will pay a visit in January as Bermuda Football Association seek to line up regular matches for the senior national team.

Director of Coaching, Clyde Best, confirmed yesterday that Swedish cup champions Helsingborg could make a visit to the Island in mid-November and the national team were being lined to play in one or possibly two games .

The matches are part of the BFA's plan to rejuvenate the national programme by organising regular games both here and abroad. Yesterday Best urged local clubs to encourage their players to support the international aspirations of the association.

"It's on the burner again but we need the co-operation of the clubs and the coaches,'' said Best.

"It's very important that they encourage their players to join the national programme. It's important that we get the pride back in the national programme.

"If you have any aspirations of playing internationally or playing professionally this is the way you are going to do it. If we're getting exposure overseas then people are going to get to see you.

"You are not going to get recognition by just playing for your club.'' Best and new national coach Robert Calderon have compiled an initial list of 25 local-based players and nine others who are studying or playing abroad, including professionals Shawn Goater, Kyle Lightbourne and David Bascome.

Calderon will be assisted by Gary Darrell, who was the coach during the 1992 World Cup qualifying campaign. Darrell, trying his hand at radio commentary these days during Match of the Day on Sundays, will be in charge of the Olympic Under-23 team.

"You can't get the programme going if you don't play games,'' said Best.

"I've been saying that all along.'' Coach Calderon agreed. "One of the biggest drawbacks in having a national squad in training is not having a game,'' said the former Bermuda captain.

"It's very difficult to have them training in November and playing a game in April. That created many problems for them.'' Calderon said the revamped programme was designed to guage the team ahead of the next World Cup qualifying for the 2002 finals in Asia.

"These games are with the view to making a decision whether to re-enter the qualifier of the World Cup,'' said the coach.

"There are seven or eight players who are new to the programme and hopefully they will get the public interested and enthusiastic and come out to watch them play.

"We're going to work with the senior team and the under-23 team at the same time. Gary is going to be in charge of the Olympic team and will assist me with the national team and vice versa.'' Some of the players new to the national programme include North Village's Kofi Dill, Kevin Jennings, Randy Spence and Jemeiko Jennings as well as Kenny Mills and Tokia Russell of Second Division teams PHC and Social Club, Wolves midfielder Peter Sampson, Keishon Smith of Devonshire Colts and Somerset's Andrew Rahman.

The players are asked to report to Warwick Academy field on Saturday morning at 9.30 for a training session.
