No surprises as the big guns march on

Giant-killing thrills and spills were hard to come by in the opening round of the Commercial Cup with all the fancied teams advancing.

Last season's beaten semi-finalists MR Onions enjoyed a comfortable passage into the second round after B division opponents Dockyard Falcons could only muster nine men. Departing centre-forward Keith Donald led the line well and less unselfish play would have seen him add to his solitary goal, with strike partner Nick Briggs benefiting most and netting four times.

Other scorers for the Onions were Billy Shanahan (two), Greg Fraser, Steve Woodward, Jon Tindall, Simon Gregory and Gary Garnett. Falcons competed well throughout and were rewarded with a consolation goal when a right wing cross was headed in at the far post.

BAA racked up seven without reply against Somerset Bridge. Veteran Jim Campbell opened the scoring with a bullet header from an Adam Shaw cross. BAA added to the lead when Dave Gibbs scored the first of his hat trick.

Andy Ryder added the third with a powerful drive from 25 yards to leave the score 3-0 at the break. The second half was more of the same and BAA added a fourth when Paul Colvin raced onto a Pete Coleman through ball and slotted home.

Dave Gibbs then added his second before Martin Jones scored for the fifth game in a row to make it six. And in the final minutes Gibbs completed the rout.

In-form PHC Raiders gave Boulevard a 10-1 hiding. Sheridan (Baldy) Ming nodded home a Sammy Swan cross early on. Boulevard came back with a goal out of nowhere as the wind caught keeper Cal Waldron off guard. Raiders then changed gears and ran rampant.

Eddy Dowling grabbed a hat-trick to make it 4-1. Not to be outdone Craig Crichlow grabbed three more to make it 8-1 at the half. Goals seem to dry up in second half but Otis Steede chipped Boulevard keeper late on to make it 9-1. Boulevard had a chance to add to the score sheet as sub Ellsworth Bean fouled inside the box but keeper Waldron denied Boulevard by diving to his right to make a stop. Quincy Hunt completed the Raiders rampage.

Division A strugglers Prospect/Fire found no respite in the Cup as they went down 3-1 to Tuff Dogs courtesy of two Kenny Outerbridge goals and one from Aaron Brown. Alan Wilkinson was on target for Prospect/Fire while Tuff Dogs player Dauntay Darrell was sent off for foul language.

St. George's All-Stars beat Devonshire All-Stars who started the match shorthanded and with a keeper carrying an injury. Former Devonshire Colts striker, Stevie Dickinson showing no sympathy for the club he starred for in the 80's, netted the first St. George's goal in the 14th minute.

This was followed by strikes from the Minors family - Brent scored in the 19th minute and Delbert closed off the scoring in the first half with a goal in the 43rd minute. In the second half Devonshire, now at full strength, tore back into the game. In the 54th minute Michael Bean scored the best goal of the match.

A cross came over from the right side of the pitch and Bean powerfully headed home. Unfortunately for Devonshire, the effective midfielder, Jermaine Belboda limped off the pitch having pulled a hamstring.

This opened the door for St. George's substitute Lionel (Tit) Cann to shine as he ended the contest with strikes in the 77th and 86th minutes.

Pest Control hope to have kick-started their season with a 5-1 drubbing of Valley at Shelly Bay. Jamie Matthew opened the scoring on 15 minutes and Dante Foley stunned Valley with a beautiful strike from 25 yards shortly after. Valley pressed but were continuously turned back by a determined and organised Pest Control defence.

Both teams came out strongly after the break and Pest Control went further in front through a Shayne Hollis free kick. Valley refused to concede defeat clawed one back and and carved out numerous chances only to find the Pest Control keeper and defence in inspired form.

Pest Control stretched the lead through a Jamie Matthew header as Valley began to chase the game. Anthony Dyer hammered the final nail in the Valley coffin to send the Fumigators into the second round for the first time.

Devonshire Lions romped to a 6-2 victory over fellow B league opposition St. David's courtesy of a Worrell Bean hat-trick. Derek Weeks, Kevin Hodson and Devon Brangman were also on target.

Justin Pitcher and Rudell Pitcher netted for the Eastenders. Hat-tricks from Troy Govia and Junior DeSilva fired Somerset Extros to a 9-1 victory over Wolves whose Horis Landy netted a consolation goal.
