O'Donoghue hat-trick hero as MR Onions bag title

Darragh O'Donoghue bagged a hat-trick as MR Onions retained the Commercial A league title with the 7-1 thrashing of PHC Raiders on Saturday.

Needing only a point to win the league, O'Donoghue gave Onions a dream start scoring twice in the opening few minutes.

PHC gradually recovered from their disastrous start, and although they had chances to get back into the game couldn't find a way past a solid Onions defence as the rest of the half remained goalless.

Onions effectively wrapped up the game and the league when O'Donoghue scored his third in the early stages of the second half, and as PHC came apart at the seams, the champions ran riot.

Niall Baillie scored twice, while Eoghan O'Dwyer and substitute Dave Martin scored one apiece. PHC finally got a goal of their own through Robert Bean, but it was meaningless by that stage.

Onions assistant coach Jon Tindall said of the back-to-back championships: "It's been tough but we've really deserved to win the league.

"The recent developments regarding the Commercial League have reminded everyone what a good set up this league is, and I hope that all the clubs can have their futures sorted out as soon as possible."

A single goal from Brian Fubler in the 19th minute gave Robin Hood victory over Lobster Pot while third placed BAA got a 1-1 draw with Tuff Dogs.

BAA and Tuff Dogs played out a match high on endeavour but low on quality with BAA enjoying the majority of possession. Wanderers and had the ball in the net from an Adam Shaw volley but the strike was ruled out by a marginal offside call.

Despite controlling possession Tuff Dogs were rarely under threat. The second half saw more of the same with BAA creating two clear cut chances that weren't converted.

And with ten minutes to go BAA paid for their missed chances when Ian Mullings rifled a superb free-kick into the top corner to put Tuff Dogs 1-0 up.

Wanderers pushed forward in search of an equalizer and in the last minute Nick Rushton headed home to give BAA a share of the spoils and the score finished 1-1.

Dandy Town Roots defeated North Village 2-0. The game was evenly balanced throughout with both teams creating chances but it was the Roots who made the most of their opportunities. Roots finally took the lead when a Joey Weeks corner eluded everyone and nestled in the top corner with the keeper scrambling.

Village went searching for the equaliser in the second half and had the hosts pinned back for long spells.

The pressure was eventually resolved when Lloyd Christopher received the ball on the right and outsmarted the Village defenders before crossing the ball to Shennon Gilbert who slammed the ball home from two yards out.

That goal deflated Village and Roots cruised to the final whistle. Prospect/Fire took a rare point with the 3-3 draw with Key West Rangers.

In the B Division Hamilton Parish beat St. George's All-Stars 7-2. Corey Hill and Irving Burgess got two each wile Sean Dill, Greg Wilson and Alvin Baker were on target in the rout while Cal Raynor got two for the home side. Valley beat Somerset Bridge 5-4 while Boulevard triumphed by the same score over St. David's.

In the B Division Group Two Devonshire Lions secured second place after group champions Somerset Extros failed to raise a side.

At Malabar Dockyard Falcons took a 4-1 half-ftime lead over Wolves thanks to braces by Duane DeRoza and Clifton Anderson, with Horace Landy replying for Wolves.

Wolves managed three second half goals through Mickey Robinson (two), and a long range shot from Bobby Smith.

However, Dockyard replied with two strikes, including an excellent solo effort by Anderson to complete his hat-trick, for a final score of 6-4.

Goals from Jermaine Bean, Stephen Simmons, Germano Botelho and Ellington Weldon helped Devonshire All-Stars to defeat Pest Control 4-2.
