One Love, One Community campaign still alive
Devonshire Cougars president Craig Clarke insists the club's 'One Love, One Community' campaign' is still alive – with a nine-a-side football tournament to be held at the Rec.
Clarke also said a new batch of T-shirts with the words 'One Love, One Community' emblazoned on the front and 'Peace, Stop the Violence' on the back had arrived on the Island and would be distributed at local schools and throughout the community.
The club launched the anti-violence campaign two months ago during a Premier Division match against cross-town rivals Boulevard Blazers, a week after Cougars player Shaki Minors was shot outside the Southside Cinema.
Since then the shootings have continued with Hamilton Parish player Perry Puckerin being gunned down outside Hamilton Parish Working Men's Club last month.
Clarke now plans to breathe fresh life into the campaign and has urged local footballers to sign up for the nine a-side competition which will see teams from Bermuda's nine parishes play one another.
"People have said that our campaign has gone quiet in recent weeks, but that is because we have been waiting for a new shipment of T-shirts to come in," Clarke said.
"We are now looking at organising an all-day football tournament in an effort to bring the whole community together through sport.
"We have certainly not given up and are striving to do all we can to stem the violence – we want to send out a positive message."
The date of the tournament has not yet been fixed but Clarke said it would likely take place within the next five weeks. The team names will be One Love, One Peace, One Friend, One Faith, One Country, One Hope, One People, One Family, One Unity.
"Each team will be made up of mixed players," explained Clark. "The names of the players will be drawn out of a hat and they could find themselves playing for any of the nine parishes.
"It is open to all local players and we will be giving out T-shirts at the event. We will be speaking to the Bermuda Football Association to try and organise a date for the tournament."
The Ministry and Labour and Public Safety and Bermuda Blue Limited have sponsored the T-shirts.
