Overseas incentive for top athletes
Bermuda's top athletes will be striving to be crowned male and female champions in their respective events as Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) host the National Championships at the National Sports Centre (NSC) today and tomorrow.
The two-day event will see the likes of Aaron Evans, Latroya Darrell, Tre Houston, Xavier James, Matthew Spring and Sean Trott take to the track in an attempt to settle any disputes about who is the best in their respective events.
With last year's meet representing a huge incentive for Arantxa King and Tyrone Smith as they attempted to make the Olympic standard, this year's event won't be any different with many runners still harbouring ambitions of competing in upcoming overseas meets around the world.
Also included in the weekend meet will be a services race in which Fire and Police departments will compete in relays for bragging rights.
Organiser Cal Simons said yesterday he was excited about the meet and was hopeful that all of the Island's best athletes, both track and road runners, would come out to compete.
"We would like everyone to come out, it will be exciting," said Simons.
"I know that the likes of Victoria Fiddick have registered so we are hopeful that all of the top athletes on the Island will be there.
"We also have some kids doing hurdles, those are the ones who are going to compete in the Junior CAC Championships. These events haven't been contested for a few years now.
"We are looking forward to an exciting time. We have the Police and Fire Department doing a services event in the relays.
"Day one (today) will be a combined thing with the Island Soccer League (ISL) as they have their games before our meet kicks off.
The opening ceremony is at 4 p.m. with the PHC majorettes performing.
The under-14 male and female 60/80 metres hurdles the first events of championships, starting at 5 p.m.
Action tomorrow begins at 4 p.m.
Admission for the two days is free of charge and all awards will be presented after each final event with the closing ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m.
