Pacers bring back nine medals from US meet

Pacers Track Club team this week bringing back nine medals from the 24th East Coast Invitational Track Meet in Bathesda, Maryland.

Led by Danielle Watson's three medals in the 11-12 year girls, the team had plenty to smile as they returned home on Monday. Watson was the toast of the team while sprinter Raneika Bean was inducted into the meet's Silver Medal Hall of Fame.

Competing in conditions that were by far the coolest in the history of the event -- but still 89 degrees average -- the team picked up two gold, three silver and four bronze medals.

On the first day of competition, Bean set the stage for her team-mates by winning a gold medal in the 15-16 girls triple jump with a leap of 39-feet, one-half-inch. Also on the first day, Reggie Walcott, Watson Latisha Perinchief and Janine Scott all qualified for the 200 metres semi-final.

Gabrielle Wilkinson placed seventh in the 15-16 boys discus with a throw of 118-feet, six-inches.

Day two was the busiest for the athletes as most competed in either the 100, 200, 400, 1500 metres or one or two field events. And by the end of the day the team had won two more medals with Reginald Walcott placing second in the 9-10 boys long jump with a leap of 12-feet, 10-inches and Wilkinson finishing third to win a bronze in the 15-16 boys shot putt with a throw of 45-feet, 10-inches, a personal best.

Watson and Scott both qualified for the 200 and 400 metres finals while Bean clinched a spot in the 15-16 girls 100 metres finals. Richard Walcott finished seventh in the 15-16 boys 1500 metres in 4:22.7.

Day three belonged to Watson as, in the first event she won the 11-12 girls long jump with Perinchief placing second. The jumps were 15-feet, two-inches for Watson and 15-feet for Perinchief.

Richard Walcott and Jarita Dill added to the Bermuda medal total by placing third in their 800 metres events. Walcott's time of 2:02.5 was a PB while Dill had a 2:14.2 time.

Bean went on to place fourth in the 100 metres in 12.4 seconds.

During the afternoon Watson added to her long jump gold by placing second in the 11-12 girls 400 metres in 60.5 seconds and third in the 200 metres in 27.5.

Some 2,585 athletes from the United States, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Antigua, British Virgin Island and the Bahamas competed in the weekend meet.
