Peniston eager to silence the critics

North Village new boy Jared Peniston has braced himself for a hot reception from his old team-mates when he tussles with former club Dandy Town in the Martonmere Cup.

Village were due to face the Hornets on Saturday night at BAA Field but the match was postponed due to bad weather and will now be played tomorrow night.

Peniston, who signed for Village from First Division Wolves at the start of the season, spent a number of years at St.John's Field and admits he has been on the receiving end of some 'trash talk' in the build-up to the game.

"I'm playing against a former club and I've caught some slack throughout last week and so I'm definitely going out there to silence a few people," said Peniston, who has represented the national team.

"You always want to beat your former club and I'm certainly confident of us winning this match. Even though the Hornets and me are now through, this game will not be just another kick for me."

The Rams chalked up an impressive 5-2 victory over Devonshire Colts in their previous Martonmere Cup match and have already qualified for the knockout stages of the competition along with PHC, Devonshire Cougars and Dandy Town.

And while Peniston is anxious to renew acquaintances with the Hornets, he already has one eye on this weekend's Premier Division curtain-raiser against newly promoted Southampton Rangers.

"This weekend we want to get off on the right foot," he said. "Every game is important but it's not how you start the league that's important, it's how you finish. We've been working hard in training and things are coming together for us."

Tomorrow's other Martonmere Cup match will see a repeat of last year's final between defending champions PHC and Devonshire Cougars. However, Zebras defender Kevin Richards said there would be no war of words, or revenge on the cards when the rivals meet.

"The game against Cougars should be a great chance to test how far we have come this early in the season," said Richards.

"We're trying not to dwell on the fact that we're through to the next round as one of the main reasons we had so much success last season was down to our consistency.

"It should make for a good game but I believe we're the best team in Bermuda and we will approach the game looking for a win."

He added: "Teams need to know that when they play us it will be one of the most difficult games they will have. Just because we're through to the next round doesn't mean we will be taking it easy against Cougars."

The game between PHC and Cougars kicks off at 7 p.m., while North Village and Dandy Town lock horns at 9 p.m.
