Pitcher snatches maiden series title

Arthur Pitcher Jr. held his nerve to claim a maiden Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA) Road Race Series victory at Southside on Sunday in the Male 'A' category.

The cricketer turned cyclist held off the likes of runner-up Elliott Hubbard, Darren Glasford and Kevin Topple to snatch victory in the 31-mile event (nine laps around the 3.5-mile course).

Gregg Reid rounded out the top five in Sunday's second race of the season.

Pitcher, who has represented Bermuda at cricket and St. George's in Cup Match, has made a good start to his fledgling cycling career and recently put in some gutsy performances in the BBA Hill Climbs, including a second place finish in the Fairmont Southampton Princess climb.

Distances for each category ranged from 3.5 miles for Junior 'C' right up to Male and Female 'A' riding 31 miles. In the Male 'B' group, Dave Collins emerged victorious covering their six lap- 20-mile course with minimal fuss with Vic Ball coming to the tape second.

Norbert Meyer, Joey Richardson and Paulo Madeiros rounded out the top five in the category.

On the women's side, having only one female rider in the Female 'A', Karen Smith took line honours unchallenged, while Mary Ellen Goodwin took line honours in the Female 'B' with team-mate Heather Cooper coming second.

Hayley Evans and Sarah Jordon rounded out the four competing in the category.

In the Junior categories, Dominic Mayo won the 'A' category with Elizabeth Jordan placing second on their 20 mile course.

Daniel Oatley and Kamryn Minors were first and second respectively in the 10 mile 'B' division, while Christian Oatley won the 3.5 mile Junior 'C' race with Rico Smith,

Tristan Narraway, Cameron De Ste Croix and Max De Ste Croix rounding out the top five.
