Place tipped to shine at CAC Juniors
Bermuda's Carifta Games athletes will make up the nucleus of the team that will compete at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Championships in the Dominican Republic.
Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) have compiled a list of 18 athletes to compete in the Caribbean next month, including Jeneko Place, Taylor Ashley Bean, Christian Wright, Juma Mouchette and Akeila Richardson who all medalled at this year's Carifta Games in the Cayman Islands.
A trio of new faces in the form of Tyra Stovell, Victoria Clarke, and Jerquan Symonds have also been selected, although Jasmine Brunson will miss out because of school commitments.
BTFA president Donna Watson said she has no doubts that Bermuda's contingent could hold their own against the regional powerhouses as many of the Island's squad had already performed with distinction on the international stage this year.
Sprinter Place currently holds down the tenth fastest time in the IAAF Youth 200m world rankings (21.27 seconds), while Shaquille Dill has the sixth fastest 800m time (1:51.38).
"We're looking for some good performances as this is nearly the same team we sent to Carifta with three great additions in Tyra Stovell, who just ran a personal best in the 200 metres, Victoria Clarke and Jerquan Symonds," Watson said.
"I think our athletes will fare pretty well as these athletes are peaking at the right time as we saw these great performances this past weekend in the National Championships.
"This will definitely be a much tougher competition than Carifta but I still think our athletes are up for the challenge."
Watson has tipped Place for podium finishes and also has high hopes of 800m pair Stevens-Carty and Dill.
"I again expect Jeneko to be on the podium in the 100 and 200m, Henry Stevens-Carty and Shaquille Dill in the 800m as they will also be trying to qualify for the World Junior Championships.
"Richardson, Bean, Wright, Allison Outerbridge, Ashley Berry, and hopefully a few other surprises will also produce on the day."
Bermuda's management team includes Gina Evans (team manager), Michael Watson (head coach), Bill Euler (coach), and Paul Simons (junior coach).
The team leaves Bermuda on June 30 and returns on July 5.
