History was made at Somerset Cricket Club on Wednesday night as a late Terry Rogers strike earned visiting Ireland Rangers a first win against Somerset Trojans in a First Division match.

Just when a draw seemed imminent, Rogers popped up in the box to finish off a set-piece that began from a throw-in to break his team's jinx over a Trojans side that also suffered their first loss of the season.

Earlier, stalwart Henry Santucci gave Rangers a dream start when he too fired home a left-footed shot from the top of the box that gave the 'keeper absolutely no chance.

Rangers led at the half but had their slim advantage cancelled out when Adrian Burrows scrambled the ball across the line late in the second half to throw the game wide open.

Reflecting upon his team's inspiring win, Rangers coach Duane (Box) DeRoza said: "It was really nice to finally get over this hurdle and the guys are feeling pumped.

"The guys are really excited and at this stage of the season we are right where we want to be – though there is still room for improvement.

"Ireland Rangers had never beaten Somerset before Wednesday night and this win should give our players a good psychological boost and put us in good stead."

Meanwhile, in the night's curtain raiser in the West End, X-Roads picked up their first point of the season when they held Prospect to a scoreless draw, a result that enabled the latter to leapfrog Trojans on goal difference and move into fifth place in the standings.

First Division action continues on Sunday with second-placed St.David's hosting fourth-placed Somerset Eagles at Lords, sixth-placed Trojans travelling to BAA Field to tackle eighth-placed hosts BAA, tenth-placed Paget entertaining seventh-placed Ireland Rangers at White Hill Field, bottom team Wolves and ninth-placed X Roads doing battle at Devonshire Rec and fifth-placed Prospect taking on third-placed St.George's Colts at Police Field.

League leaders Young Men's Social Club have a bye.

There are no Premier Division fixtures scheduled for this weekend.
