Rangers punished by Pitcher
St. David's 193-4
Southampton Rangers 189
OJ PItcher hit an unbeaten 88 as St. David's handed Southampton Rangers their first league defeat of the season.
The Islanders blew the Premier Division title race wide open as they ran out comfortable winners, easily chasing down their target of 190 with 12 overs to spare.
Pitcher made the home side pay dearly for dropping him first ball, and his innings, which took 85 balls and included 14 fours and a six, underlined just why David Moore has been so keen to have him back in the national squad.
His stands of 65 with Sammy Robinson (33) for the third wicket, and of 78 with cousin Justin Pitcher (22) which saw St.David's home, were so dominant that only batting mistakes ever looked like handing Rangers a wicket.
Skipper for the day in the absence of Delyone Borden and Lionel Cann, OJ Pitcher came to the crease with his side wobbling on 38 for two following the early departures of opener Lauren Marshall and Adrian Burrows.
Burrows was Traddie Simpson's second wicket of the innings. The St. David's wicketkeeper failed to get his hands out of the way of a ball that reared sharply from a good length and feathered a catch to his opposite number, Jelani Albouy. Pitcher should have been his third.
Simpson sent a snorter of a delivery angling across the St David's batsman, got the edge the ball deserved and could then only watch in horror as Albouy dropped the easiest of chances.
The Rangers wicketkeeper was already celebrating the dismissal before the ball reached him, and his loss of concentration cost his team the match. OJ Pitcher never gave the home side even a sniff of a chance after that, and as St. David's methodically chipped away at the total, so Rangers whilted in the afternoon heat.
With the score on 103 for two, Robinson threw his wicket away, chipping the slowest of full tosses from Dion Stovell into the grateful hands of Dwayne Leverock. Angelo Cannonier followed soon after, dancing down the wicket and completely missing a Leverock delivery that gave Albouy a simple stumping.
Still at 115 for five, it would have taken a minor miracle for Rangers to win and they seemed to know it as well, eventually throwing in the towel with St. David's still needing 49 runs to win.
The inevitable arrived with the final ball of the 38th over, with OJ Pitcher crashing Stephan Dill for four under Leverock's foot as he made a half-hearted attempt to stop the ball.
Rangers' toothless bowling attack, Simpson aside, was in stark contrast to that of St. David's who possesed an embarrassment of riches yesterday.
Stefan Kelly, Greg Foggo, Angelo Cannonier, Justin Pitcher, OJ Pitcher and Tamauri Tucker all had a go on a lively green wicket that gave both set of batsmen no end of troubles.
Foggo ripped the heart out of Rangers' top order, picking up the wickets of Curtis Jackson, Kwane Tucker and Jason Simons as the home side crumbled to 16 for three midway through the fourth over.
Not for the first time in their careers, Dion Stovell (58) and Janeiro Tucker (40) rescued the situation for their side but not before Burrows had missed a catch down the leg side to let Tucker off the hook early on.
Cannonier finally had Tucker caught on the boundary by Marshall, and when Stovell and Rayner (4) followed soon after the home side were back in trouble at 120 for six. Dwayne Leverock (18 not out) and Albouy (25) managed a mini-revival, but OJ Pitcher came on to mop up the tail, taking two wickets as Rangers were finally out for 189.
Devonshire Rec. 299-3
PHC 303-3
Devonshire's Chris Foggo smashed 155 and PHC's Jason Anderson cracked 112 in this high scoring clash at Wellington Oval which saw PHC winning by seven wickets.
With the game reduced to 44 overs due to overnight rain affecting the wicket, Devonshire quickly went about posting a big total, with Foggo and Herbie Bascome doing most of the damage.
The pair met at the crease at 57 for two and took the score to 227 for three, with Foggo remaining unbeaten at the end with 155 and while Bascome blazed his way to a fine knock of 60.
Kevin Tucker, Hassan Durham and David Adams all took a wicket apiece.
In reply, and after being deducted five overs for slow over rate, PHC made it to the finish line thanks to Anderson and Dean Stephens in 37 overs.
The pair put on 179 for the second wicket with Anderson following Foggo with an unbeaten 112.
Stephens scored 91 to help get the required total.
Derrick Brangman and Ricky Brangman sr. both took a wicket each.
