Revs take another look at Khano

Khano Smith: On the bench for his former MLS team, New England Revolution, in a friendly match against FC Dallas on Tuesday night.

Free agent Khano Smith is back training with his former club New England Revolution after failing to make an impression in English football.

The Bermuda international was a guest player in the Revs' first pre-season match, a 2-0 defeat against FC Dallas in Florida on Tuesday, but was an unused substitute.

It is not known whether the Revs are weighing up a move for the 29-year-old or merely providing him an opportunity to maintain his fitness as a gesture of goodwill to a ex-player.

Former Bermuda resident Gwyn Williams, the Revolution goalkeeper coach, said it was too early to say if anything concrete would come of Smith's return to the club.

"Khano has been training with the Revs for a while," said Williams, who leaves the team at the end of this week to become the director of coaching for the Alabama Youth Soccer Association.

"I don't know whether anything permanent will happen for him and at the moment he's training with the Revs to keep himself fit."

Life has hardly been a bed of roses for the winger since leaving the Gillette Stadium nearly 18 months ago.

Moved on from Seattle Sounders to New York Red Bulls before playing a competitive match, he struggled to make an impact in the Big Apple and was subsequently cast into the footballing wilderness mid-season by unimpressed coach Juan Carlos Osario.

Disillusioned with the MLS and desperate to resurrect his stuttering career, Smith then packed his bags for England, the spiritual home of football, on a mission to win a professional contract.

Although a trial at Shaun Goater's former team Southend United came to nothing, Smith did enough to convince Lincoln City manager Chris Sutton he was worthy of a short-term deal at the League Two club.

And for a while it seemed as though Smith's raw pace and power may be enough to get by in the muck and nettles of the English lower leagues, where finesse and flair are often viewed as a luxury.

Heralded by Sutton after his Imps debut as a "real threat", Smith soon fell out of favour with the ex-England striker and was released by them last month, before heading to League One side Brentford where he failed to earn a contract.

After enduring such a torrid time since parting company with Steve Nicol and Co. it is no surprise Smith has returned to his happy hunting ground where he spent four seasons, and played in two successive MLS Cup finals.
