Roy romps to easy win
Steven Roy stormed to victory in the final of the Fritz Reiter Memorial Match Play Championships at Riddell's Bay yesterday.
Roy comfortably beat David James nine and eight in the 36-hole final, and was never really threatened as he dominated the day's play from the start.
Paul Adams, who was beaten by James in the semi-finals, took third place, defeating Twilton Smith over an 18-hole consolation match.
Riddell's Bay professional Chris Smith also came out yesterday a winner. He was the best of the rest in a medal match featuring the nine professionals from the original field who didn't make it into the last day of the championships.
n Michael Sims is facing an almost impossible task of making the cut in his latest venture on the Nationwide Tour following a disappointing first round yesterday.
Sims pencilled in five bogeys, offset by just one birdie – at the par five, second – to post a four-over-par 74 on the opening day of the Boise Open at the Hillcrest Country Club in Boise, Idaho.
And with leader Blake Adams returning an eight-under 63, the Bermudian now has a mountain to climb in his bid to move into the top half of the field, almost certainly requiring a sub-par effort in today's second round in order to have any chance of advancing to weekend play.
Starting on the back nine at the 6,801-yard, par 71 course, Sims began with a bogey at the par-four 10th yesterday and never managed to get back on track. He also dropped shots at the 18th, first, sixth and ninth holes – all par fours.
The tournament was televised on the Golf Channel last night and more TV coverage will be provided between 7.30 and 9.30 p.m. tonight.
Yesterday's effort will have disappointed the long-hitting Bermudian who is struggling to retain his Nationwide Tour card and avoid having to play in the first stages of PGA Tour Qualifying School later this year
Currently he sits 67th on the Tour money-list with $63,264 but won't add to that total if he fails to make the cut today.
He's already pulled out of next week's World Cup qualifiers in Venezuela when he could have partnered Port Royal pro Dwayne Pearman, in order to concentrate on the Tour.
Pearman will now team up with Scott Roy.
