Bermuda recently, will arrive in New York today after being forced to abandon the yacht.

The yacht, which was en route to the Bahamas from Bermuda, was completely disabled by engine and steering problems.

The vessel had already had her sails torn some 300 miles south southwest of the Island and the four-person crew was already planning to return to the Island when it experienced the steering problems.

A Harbour Radio spokesman said Norwegian ship the MV San Antonio , which was on its way to New York from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, picked up the crew on December 26.

They are expected to arrive in New York today, while the yacht was set adrift 300 miles off Bermuda.

The abandoned yacht -- which is unlikely to be recovered -- was just one of several vessels which ran into trouble during the recent bad weather.

Three bulk carriers, and one US Navy ship, all came to Bermuda with engine troubles and an injured crew member respectively, while another, the MV Gonio a 10,000-tonne small tanker, is expected to arrive today for repairs.

The MV Humbergracht is at Penno's Wharf after it arrived in Bermuda after developing engine difficulties.

The bulk carrier was saling to Montreal from the United Kingdom.

On the way she experienced difficulties and her speed was reduced to four knots, although she made it to Bermuda on December 22.

After the engine was repaired the vessel resumed its journey to Canada on Boxing Day, its cooling system deteriorated and the ship returned Bermuda yesterday where repairs are still underway.

A second bulk carrier, the MV Luck arrived on December 22 from Baltimore, Maryland, for lube oil and spares but was unable to land because of the rough weather.

The ship spent one night offshore before making her way to Murray's Anchorage and then onto Dockyard.

She sailed on Christmas day to the Gulf of Cadiz in Spain.

The MV Luber left Alvires, Spain bound for Savannah, Georgia but Gales on the eastern coast of the United States forced it to change course.

The ship stayed 15-20 miles off Bermuda before sailing to Georgia on December 24.

US Navy ship the USS Prevail which was en route to Norfolk, Virgina from Rota, Spain, diverted to Bermuda to drop off a sick crewman who had a leg injury.

She then left yesterday for Norfolk.
