Smith holds off Wright
Smith's rival Brett Wright needed to win the last race and have Smith finish third or worse in order to overhaul the Pan Am Games silver medallist.
Smith however got off to the best start eventually winning the race and the day. Wright fell back to seventh.
A total of 12 boats were on the starting line with several of the regulars missing due to the holiday celebrations. Light and variable conditions prevailed with large wind shifts throughout the day.
Craig Davis started the day with a first and added two second-place finishes, four thirds, a fourth and a fifth to give him third place overall with a total of 22 points.
Smith and Wright traded the remaining wins back and forth until with one race remaining they each had four firsts.
The final totals were Smith 11 points and Wright 17.
