Smith in fight to get fit

New England Revolution's coach Steve Nicol is sweating on the fitness of Khano Smith who sprained his ankle in last week's friendly against Brazilian club Cruzeiro.

The Bermuda international picked up the injury during a robust first-half tackle and left the Gillette Stadium wearing a walking boot to protect his right ankle.

Midfielder Steve Ralston is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a dislocated shoulder during the match, which the Revs lost 3-0.

"I think that's the only kind of luck going for us at the moment, isn't it?" said coach Nicol. "Rallie's dislocated his elbow and Khano Smith has done his ankle. It's not exactly what we were looking for."

That Smith was last night due to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Boston Red Sox's match against Arizona Diamondbacks suggests his injury is not too serious.

The winger was invited to Fenway Park take part in 'Bermuda night' which will feature a Gombey troupe welcoming Red Sox fans into the stadium, with Bermuda's Twanee Butterfield performing the national anthem.

The promotion is an ongoing partnership between the Bermuda Department of Tourism, the Red Sox and New England Sports Network (NESN).
