Some $1,774.75 was raised for a deserving charity -- in this case P.A.L.S. -- when the annual Old Boys match between Somerset and Harris' Bay took place
At the prizegiving dinner at Somerset Cricket Club on the weekend, the cheque was presented by Freddie Tucker, Chairman of the Old Boys Association, to Ann Smith-Gordon of P.A.L.S.
At the match, Harris' Bay were successful in taking the trophy which Somerset have held for the past 10 years, Somerset scoring 107 in reply to the Harris' Bay total of 220.
At the prizegiving the Howard Berkeley Trophy for most wickets went to Reggie Tucker of Somerset who took eight for 76, the most wickets in the match since Maurice Musson's seven for 18 in 1956.
Tucker also came away with the best allrounder and MVP for Somerset as he also scored 38 not out. Sinclair Archibald walked away with the trophy for the highest score, 66, which beat his own score of 32 last year for which he won the same trophy. Archibald was also awarded the trophy for best allrounder for Harris' Bay.
Mike McGowan of Harris' Bay won the Oliver Caisey trophy for most sixes in the game.
SAILING SLG Seven sailors turned out for the first day of racing in the Junior Optimist class in Hamilton Harbour on Sunday.
Once again the head of the fleet was the A team made up of Alexandra Crane, Alexander Lines and Alexander Kirkland, Crane and Lines tied with 6.25 points and Kirkland on 14 points from six races.
Aggressive starting tactics were displayed by all of the young sailors who have made great progress since last year and more use of rules and tactics is starting to raise the level of sailing by the young sailors.
Racing starts at 1 p.m. and is open to anyone who has reached the advanced level. For further information call 295-5855 for entry forms.
HOCKEY HOC The new hockey season began on Saturday with Canaries B showing their determination to hold onto their title by thrashing Cardinals 5-0, the scoring started by a penalty flick by Val Young. Other goals were scored by Lisa Haynes (two), Alison Cameron and Rebecca Payne.
Canaries A showed newcomers Swifts no mercy, hammering them 4-0 after putting them under pressure from the outset.
In Sunday's match Bluebirds kept Police Orioles B on the run in the first half, but after the restart the tone changed when Lynn Bradshaw of Orioles scored in the first three minutes. Bluebirds equalised 15 minutes later to earn a 1-1 draw.
GOLF GLF Henry Ascento has been confirmed as one representative, and the second will be determined by a 36-hole play-off next weekend at Port Royal, as the Bermuda Golf Association makes plans to send a two-man team to Venezuela next month to compete in a tournament.
The BGA has been extended an invitation by the Golf Federation of Venezuela to send a team of two players to compete in their Simon Bolivar Cup from November 6-12. The tournament will be played at the Izcaragua County Club in Caracas and the event will be a team stroke play over 72 holes, each team's score being the sum of the two balls.
Members of the Bermuda Golf Association, who are currently carrying a handicap of three or better, are invited to compete in the play-off.
