Somerset Eagles in hunt for Russell

Heading West? Hornets striker Antwan Russell has been targeted by Premier Division newcomers Somerset Eagles.

Temperamental striker Antwan Russell has been linked with a move to Premier Division newcomers Somerset Eagles.

The White Hill club are keen to secure his services for the upcoming campaign and have already approached the Dandy Town and Bermuda Hogges player.

Should the ex-PHC player decide to join Eagles he will be reunited with former Bermuda Under-17 coach, Kenny Thompson, who coached Eagles to the First Division title last season.

Somerset Bridge Recreation Club (SBRC) president and Government senator, Marc Bean, believes a player of Russell's calibre would be a valuable asset for Eagles who will be without a number of players next season through studies abroad.

"We are definitely interested in having Antwan join us and are prepared to make every effort to pursue him and others," he said.

"With some of our younger players travelling overseas to attend school we are looking to bolster the squad in order to be competitive in the Premier Division next season."

Russell's potential departure would also leave Hornets with another void to fill following last month's resignation of coach Scott Morton.

Morton, who coached Hornets to Dudley Eve honours last season, was recently appointed as coach of Bermuda's Under-23 national team.

Another Premier Division top contender without a coach are league and Martonmere Cup champions Devonshire Cougars.

Cougars lost the services of coach Devarr Boyles who resigned at the end of last season to take on the full-time job as Bermuda Football Association's youth director.

There has been much hype surrounding who will succeed 2008-09 Coach of the Year Boyles at the Den next season with Boulevard Blazers coach Andrew Bascome, ex-Blazers coach John Rebello, assistant Hogges coach Jack Castle and current Hamilton Parish coach and former Cougars goalkeeper Mark Jennings among those who have been linked to the top post.

UEFA B Licensed coach Bascome is understood to be in a pay row with Blazers and has already held informal talks with Cougars, a club he helped guide to a maiden Premier Division championship and Friendship Trophy during the 2004-05 campaign.

Last season Bascome led Blazers to their first FA Cup glory in 12 years.

The Pembroke club also finished runners up in the Dudley Eve and Premier Division under Bascome's stewardship.
