Siese misses medal glory

Bermuda sailor Owen Siese missed out on medal glory after placing 13th in the Byte CII medal race at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore yesterday.

The 15-year-old, who had been tied in fourth place prior to yesterday's final race, finished in sixth position overall.

He accumulated 72 points, just ten more than Just van Aanholt from the Netherlands Antilles, who took bronze.

Ian Barrows of the US Virgin Islands won the gold medal with Florian Haufe, of Germany, claiming silver. A fleet of 29 sailors took part in the Byte CII event.

Patton slips at

Etchell Worlds

Tim Patton is currently in 29th place at the Etchells Worlds Championships which started at Howth off the coast of Ireland on Monday.

The Bermudian had a seventh and 25th place during the opening day on Monday but bad weather prevented racing on Tuesday.

Yesterday two more races were sailed and Patton, a veteran of 20 Etchells World Championships, placed 32nd in both races in the fleet of 43 boats.

Australian John Bertrand is currently crushing all opposition with three first-place finishes and a fifth to take top spot.

Second is Germany's Ante Razmilovic who has scored a first, fourth, second and a 19th while third place is being held by Australia's Damien King with a second, fifth, ninth and a fifth place.

King was the runner-up at the 2009 Worlds.

Tennis trio move

on in U-13 event

Bermuda tennis players Chris Rego, James Finnigan and Eva Frazzoni have all qualified for the main draw of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Under-13 Caribbean Championships.

The talented trio finished the robin robin stage unbeaten to earn the right to progress to next phase in the Netherland Antilles on Tuesday.

Their team-mate, Taylor McHarg, had unenviable position of having her fate be decided by the outcome of the final match in her group as all three players finished on level points.

Unfortunately for the Bermudian, the other two players, from Barbados and the Netherlands Antilles, had won one more set than McHarg thus relegating her to the consolation draw.

Bermuda were the overall winners of the 2009 Championships followed by Trinidad and Surinam.

The main draw matches started yesterday with the top three singles, and best doubles result, counting to the overall team total.
