St. David's set to stick with winning team
pick their team tonight for Saturday's Eastern Counties Cup final against Cleveland at Lord's.
Captain Ken Pitcher yesterday confirmed that batsmen Albert Steede and James Pace, both currently on a tour of England with their club team Devonshire Rec., would be available for the game. He was also confident that everyone who participated in the eight-wicket victory against Flatts on August 15 would be available.
"As far as the Devonshire Rec. players are concerned, all of this was established before they went. There is no question we will have our strongest possible team for this important game,'' said Pitcher.
Although he could not be provoked into predicting what changes, if any, he would like to see made to his team, Pitcher said there would be no more than one change, if any at all.
It doesn't look as if fast bowler Dale Fox will be making a return to the line-up after missing the game against Flatts because of an injury he picked up during Cup Match.
Fox hasn't played any cricket since the mid-summer classic and the fact that he hasn't even been training virtually rules him out.
Anthony Foggo proved to be a worthwhile replacement for Fox in the previous round, making a large contribution as a batsman with a fine 58. But the inclusion of the Western Stars' batsman didn't help the bowling much and it remains to be seen whether St. David's will this time add a bowler to their ranks.
Cleveland will be anxious to improve on their performance of a year ago when they were decisively beaten in the final, scoring a mere 129 runs after batting first and having the champions record a victory for the loss of just one wicket.
That contest saw the St. George's guest player Wendell Smith, who knocked up 71 against Flatts in the last round, tear the attack apart with 75 not out while Albert Steede came through with 28 not out in steering St. David's to victory.
In addition to concentrating on picking a formidable line-up of bowlers, Cleveland must also hope to come up with a stronger batting team for the huge challenge ahead. But batting may be of lesser concern because on their day players like Aaron Adams, Wayne Smith, Allan Douglas, Grant Smith and skipper Peter Philpott are capable of having big knocks.
St. George's Community Centre were decisively beaten by a Select Toronto District XI in Toronto on Monday.
The Select batted first and scored 170-9 with Habib Ahmed undefeated with 60.
Travis Smith was top bowler for St. George's with three wickets for 43 while Chaka DeSilva had two for 38, Clevon Hill one for 29 and Jahmiko Marshall one for 31.
St. George's were dismissed for 80. Hill led the local batsmen with 19 while Jason Anderson hit 11.
St. George's played two other games, winning one while the other was a no result. This was their first tour and they returned home yesterday.
St. George's Cricket Club Mini Minor and Minor division soccer players are asked to attend a special training session at Wellington Oval tomorrow at 6 p.m. Others wishing to represent either team in competitive soccer this coming season are also asked to report with full training gear.
JAMES PACE -- Ready for action on Saturday.
