St. George's are my first love
This past month I was faced with the toughest decision of my coaching career. Should I stay at the club that I have fallen in love with, Cleveland, or should I return home to the club I have always loved and called home, St.George's?
Having spent the last month pondering over this question finally the decision was realised this week that the time has come to return home to St.George's as player/coach.
I am ecstatic to be heading back home to my boyhood club. St.George's groomed and molded me as a youngster and nurtured me along, for that I will be eternally indebted.
Over the last nine years I have had two coaching stints, one at St.David's and the other at Cleveland. The one thing both clubs had in common was that the players were passionate, devoted, and eager to learn.
My time at St.David's was electrifying. Many have said that my coaching job was easy because St.David's had the best young players in the Island. Others have said I did a fine job by taking a mid-table team and turning them into champions.
Regardless of which way people see it I am just appreciative for all the hard work and dedication the players put in and for that they were rewarded with several trophies.
Coaching at Cleveland was just as stimulating, but in a different light. The focus was to veer the club towards being a more competitive team in the league and Eastern Counties.
Cleveland have grown from being a First Division team to qualifying for the Belco Cup. They have made tremendous progress and that is why it was so difficult to depart. I love Cleveland from the executive right down to the fans, especially the mayor of Cleveland "BO".
I promised to deliver the Eastern Counties Trophy in three years and was unsuccessful, but after last year's close call I am confident it is still within your grasp.
To the players of Cleveland, you all are a coach's dream, committed, hard working, respectful and last but not least talented. As a team you have come a long way and where you go from here depends on you.
If there is one ingredient that is still missing it is confidence. If you don't remember anything I said before, remember this, "You can have all the talent in the world, but if you cannot display it at the right time it is merely potential."
As I move back to my old stomping ground, the place I call home, St.George's, I go with an open mind.
Just this past week someone tried to bring up negative things about what happened in the past between the club and me, but I refused to hear it. I told them clearly, "What happened in the past will stay in the past". I have moved on and I'm totally focused on this challenge.
Let me make it clear, this is by far the toughest coaching job in Bermuda. The expectations that come with this job can be intimidating at times.
I have a clear vision of where I want to take St.George's. Placing high emphasis on the youth mixed with experience is where my focus is as we look to build a championship team.
Over the last two seasons St.George's Under-14's have dominated youth cricket. To be able to pull at least three to four players from their ranks and groom them will be an asset to the long term plan of the St.George's programme.
Having been a part of the unbeatable St.George's team in the early 90s I learned how to be a winner. We trained harder then any team in Bermuda and that is what I expect of this current group of players that I am about to encounter.
If there is one thing I would love it would be to finish my playing career with Dean Minors at St.George's. For the both of us this is where it all started and this is where it all should end. If there is one thing we both miss dearly about playing for St.George's it is the sing-alongs after winning big games or major trophies.
It is time to rekindle the past and make it part of the present and future.
I want to thank the St.George's executive for entrusting me with this honourable position and I promise I will do my best to turn St. George's around as quickly as possible and get us back to the glory days.
Hail, hail, the gangs all here!
