St. George's – boring? Somerset didn't try to win!

Well the fairy tale is over for me, no more Cup Match. My last Cup Match will be remembered as Somerset passing the buck and not taking responsibility for their lack of ambition.

It will also be remembered as the week everyone had one final go at Clay Smith via radio talk shows and media, but now it's my turn.

Somerset amazes me with all their hype and foolish talk about we were boring, we didn't go after the runs, whatever. The whole thing in a nutshell is that Somerset do not know how to win the cup.

If you listened to Jacobi's speech it lets you know that they are more concerned about not losing than winning. I think Somerset take pride that they have won the cup more than St.George's overall and are trying not to lose rather then win.

For example, Somerset on day two were 60 for one with an additional 20 run lead, in comes Sammy Robinson and then Azeem Pitcher.

Someone please tell me if you are trying to win a cup why did Janiero, Jacobi and Del Hollis not come next to beat the ball about and get you 230-250 as quickly as possible?

Somerset in both their innings batted at least an hour too long, and yet we made the game boring. Do people remember a few years back when we were challengers up in Somerset and we scored 245 and declared at lunch?

That is how champions win games, need I say anymore. If you want a trophy you have to win it, not ask for favours.

Tactically Somerset do not have a Wendell Smith, a Clay Smith or a Lionel Cann, what I call technical gurus. I must say they have strong support from various former players, but the real problem in their camp is who makes all the final decisions, is it the captain or the three or four coaches, who?

It almost seems like they sit as the game is going on and try to make decisions according to how the game unfolds. One day they will learn the old motto: "Winners make it happen, losers let it happen."

On to Recman, a guy who loves cricket, writes about cricket all the time in the newspapers, but really doesn't know cricket. Recman recently wrote about Sluggo, saying he was finished, and would not have him in his team, and then Sluggo goes and gets 10 wickets against Canada and seven wickets against Scotland.

He wrote about me being finished and that I would go to Somerset and get two ducks, well does he still feel the same way now, I wonder.

One piece of advice to Recman, I know everyone has an opinion, but maybe you should seek advice from a player or former player because obviously you lack sporting knowledge when it comes to cricket.

My suggestion to you is write about things you know, which is definitely not cricket.

As for my mate Everest DeCosta - the man who loves Clay Smith. For years and years I have had to endure hearing my name across this man's talk show being chastised, ridiculed etc - I just find it amazing that some Bermudians can be so raw and so insensitive, both men and women.

My daughter Hailey was listening one day recently and heard how people were talking about me and she got very upset. So much so she picked up the phone to call the show, but I wouldn't let her.

I had to explain to my 11-year-old daughter that everybody in this world is entitled to an opinion, but guess what she asked me next? "Daddy, how come the man who is running the talk show, how come he doesn't defend you"?

It almost made me cry, but I had to laugh. Everest, I will say this, maybe one day you will actually take time out to get to know Clay Smith and invite me on your show. That way you can understand the love and passion that I have for this game and maybe then you will show me some respect.

I know I may sound bitter or angry, but I really am not. I actually want to thank these two gentlemen because over the years they have really motivated me and helped to bring the best out of me.

Overall, Cup Match is in good hands for the future. Bermuda has some real talent coming through and the level will improve in the next three to four years. To my St.George's fans particularly, and to all fans for that matter, I will miss playing in the Cup Match classic very much, but I hope over the last 21 years I have left you with some good memories.

Note: Congratulation to Janiero on a fine performance, but I think Jim and Sean got it wrong this time.

Anytime you have two great performances the champion always gets the MVP. On this day there should have been only one MVP and that was Lionel Cann.

His innings saved Cup Match for St.George's. The value of his innings was priceless and he showed true leadership and character.
