CRICKET CRI Jeremy Swan hit an unbeaten 71 and Thomas Smith scored 30 in a sixth-wicket partnership that led Cleveland County to an improbable four-wicket win over Somerset when the Under-15 League started on Saturday.

Cleveland were struggling at 21 for five in chase of Somerset's total of 130 as Myron Dill had figures of three for three.

But captain Swan, who came in at number five, batted remarkably in an innings that contained 11 fours and a six. Smith stroked five fours in the union that brought the visitors 97 runs.

Dill was among the frustrated Somerset bowlers as he finished with three for 22 while M.Butterfield took two for 21.

Earlier, Butterfield top-scored for 10-man Somerset with 44 that included seven boundaries. Dill made 40 (four fours), Michael Donawa 18 and Quinton Brangman 11. Vernon Trott took four for 33 for Cleveland and Steven Douglas three for 18.

Elsewhere, Warwick/Paget beat Flatts by 48 runs at Flatts field. Scores: Warwick/Paget 155-5, Flatts 107.

Quinton Sherlock had a fine all-round performance for Warwick/Paget as he made 62 and then took three for 18 in six overs.

Sherlock smashed 11 fours and two sixes and received assistance from Kevin Tucker who made 34, with three sixes and two fours.

Wolde Place was outstanding with the ball for Flatts as he claimed five for three in four overs, with only one run coming from an opponent's bat. Flatts always struggled to match Warwick/Paget's 30-over total with only Kyle Francis (23 not out) and Dennis Simmfons (19) reaching double figures.

Shawn Yorke helped Sherlock out with the ball by taking three for 20.

RUGBY RUG The development of Bermuda rugby has taken a significant step forward with two recent events which should offer tremendous opportunities for the future of the game on the island.

At the annual meeting of the International Rugby Football Board in New Zealand the week before Easter, Bermuda was accepted as a new member of the Board, along with Lithuania. Bermuda will now be eligible to participate in future World Rugby Cup Tournaments which are organised by the IRFB.

As the international controlling body of the sport, the IRFB also provides assistance to smaller countries for the development of rugby.

As a further move into the international arena Bermuda recently became a founding member of the newly formed Pan American Rugby Association. Other founding members are Argentina, Canada, USA, Bahamas, Brazil, Chile, Jamaica, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and Uruguay.

The Caribbean Rugby Football Union and the British Virgin Islands were elected as associate members. The association will work to encourage growth of rugby football along with competition at all levels among member countries. It is also planned to organise coaching, refereeing and administrators clinics and exchanges. The organisation will be seeking recognition from the International Rugby Football Board and from the Pan American Sports Organisation.

By being involved in both these organisations and with tours such as the recent, very successful tour to the Far East, the BRFU is hoping to raise the profile of Bermuda rugby in particular and Bermuda in general, with the aim being to continually raise the standard of the game here and make it more attractive for youngsters to play rugby.

SNOOKER SNO Paul Charleton and Billy Peniston won the First and Second Divisions in the second annual Old Colony Club Calcutta Tournament on Saturday.

Charleton squeezed by a determined Terry Southern 2-1 in the first Division final match, Southern having suprised highly regarded Steve Dunleavy 2-0 in his semi final match.

In winning his second straight Calcutta, Charleton posted 2-0 wins over Steve Bremar, Greg Falzone and Tony DeSilva on his way to the final. The third place playoff was won by Dunleavy 2-1 over Tony DeSilva. First Division play saw two 40 breaks, Charleton's 48 and Falzone's 43. Charleton and Falzone also had 47 breaks.

In the Second Division, Billy Peniston beat the pre-tournament favourite Roger (Sticks) Henderson 2-1 in the final following wins over Conrad Soares, SA Moniz and Zane DeSilva. Nick Mansell beat DeSilva 2-1 in the third place playoff.

Henderson posted a 36-break in his first match of the morning which stood up for the Second Division high break. Other high breaks were Peniston's 27 and DeSilva's 25.

Island Construction sponsored this year's Calcutta which was well attended with play from 10 a.m. to after 11 p.m.

SOCCER SOC An ambitious resurfacing job is going on at BAA field aimed at making the playing surface one of the best in Bermuda.

Already more than 150 truck loads of fill have been taken into the ground and when the job is completed some 800 loads will be laid on the field to raise the level, president David Kneisler said last week.

The ground, which is home to the BAA's senior, junior and Commercial Division teams, as well as First Division side Hamilton International, is one of the most used grounds in the Island.

"We've been talking about doing this for some time, it was just a matter of being able to afford it,'' said Kneisler, who added that club volunteers would help keep the costs down. "The state of affairs at the end of the season encouraged us to do it. The field was hard as rock and water couldn't drain through it.'' The work on the field will require it be closed for the rest of the year and the club has already been in contact with the Bermuda Football Assocation in regards to having matches scheduled for other grounds during the first half of next season.

"We're hoping that the grass will have grown sufficiently to allow play to resume in the first part of the season,'' said Kneisler. "But obviously the longer we leave it the better it will be. We've purchased more durable grass, that takes more wear and tear. We're hoping this is going to be the best (surface) on the Island.'' The club, which failed in its promotion bid last season, is now hoping to return its team to the First Division to tie in with the improvements to the ground. "We're going to work harder to get a settled side and achieve promotion,'' Kneisler added.

"If we've got a good facility then the opportunity is there to attract more players.'' Portable seats, to compensate for the loss of seating on the eastern end of the field when the car park was built, could also be on the way, Kneisler revealed.
