Sunday, Royal Bermuda Yacht Club's Contest III stayed afloat to win both races
Three of the six entries went under in the first race for the Trott Cup as Contest, skippered by Andreas Lewin, beat out Port Royal and Victory who were second and third. Challenger , Echo and Elizabeth all sank.
Echo also took in too much water in the second race of the day, as did host boat Victory , leaving Lewin and crew this time to beat out three others to clinch their second win of the day. Second was Paul Fisher's Challenger while Brett Wright in Port Royal was third.
Contest continues to lead the Coronation Cup series standings with 531 points while Challenger are second on 413 and Port Royal third on 34 points. Three race days are left, with action resuming on August 11.
MARTIAL ARTS MAT Sensei Bobby Smith, the chief instructor of the Traditional Academy of Martial Arts and a number of his students leave Sunday for Spokane, Washington, to take part in the Miyagi Chojun Martial Arts Festival.
The festival will centre around a week of intensive training under renowned Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Master Morio Higaonna, chief instructor of the International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Federation. There will also be a special guest instructor, Master Shuichi Aragaki, one of the few remaining students of the founder of Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Miyagi Chojun.
According to Smith this is "a once in a lifetime event not to be missed.'' Accompanying Smith to Washington are students Rosemarie DeShields, Mariae Dickson, Gary Marsden, Beverly Clarke, Christopher Phillips, Damon Mussenden.
SOCCER SOC North Village will hold a meeting for all senior players on Saturday at the club starting at 6 p.m.
TENNIS TEN Two of Bermuda's top junior tennis players, Jensen Bascome and Daniel Miller, head to Hilton Head, North Carolina, Friday to participate in the World Class Junior Clinic at Van Der Meet Tennis University.
The opportunities for Jensen Bascome, 16, and Daniel Miller, 15, came as a result of the coaching they received from Frank Caroud, the International Tennis Federation's development officer for the Caribbean region while he was in Bermuda recently.
"He worked with all the top juniors and recommended that some juniors be exposed to events like this,'' said Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president David Lambert.
The two teenagers leave Friday and will among a group of about 200 youngsters from different countries and will receive 30 hours of instruction between August 3 and 8.
"They are being looked at as two of our future international players,'' said Lambert. Bascome is Bermuda's number one 18-and-under junior and is a member of the BLTA's Junior Development Programme. He recently won the men's B division at the Pomander Gate Open. Miller is the island's number one 16-and-under junior and is also a member of the Junior Development Programme.
He won the men's B division of the Heineken Open earlier this year.
The Reefs Junior Open tennis tournament will be played at the Tennis Stadium on August 12-17 and participants are advised that entry forms are now available at the Stadium. There will be the following categories: Singles--18, 16, 14, 12, 12 and under; Doubles--18, 14 and under.
