Team Bermuda scoop silver in Caribbean

Team Bermuda completed one of their most successful weekends at the Elite Caribbean Cycling Championships (CCC), taking second place overall in the team competition behind Puerto Rico and ahead of Guadeloupe.

On the strength of a gold medal for Deanna Thomson in the women's time trial, a silver for Flora Duffy in the women's road race and bronze for Garth Thomson in the men's time trial, the Bermuda Bicycle Association's squad showed the depth of the local talent and indicated that the Island's future in the regional championship is bright.

The championships began with the time trial on Saturday over a hilly 20 kilometre loop with one lap for the women and two for the men.

Deanna Thomson finished the course in a time of 33:07, 13 seconds ahead of Marie Rosado of Puerto Rico.

Third place went to Susan Brown of US Virgin Islands, and in a strong showing, Duffy came in just ten seconds behind the bronze medal, suggesting that she was within shooting distance of the podium in this discipline.

In the men's event, Garth Thomson was Bermuda's lone entry and had posted the best time until Willy Roseau, of Martinique, took the gold and then Edgardi Richiez, of Puerto Rico, took silver.

Sunday's road race was contested on a loop of approximately 6.5 kilometers for the women's 90 kilometre event.

Illness forced Thomson to abandon the race, leaving Duffy alone to battle it out for silver and bronze after Rosado, of Puerto Rico, had escaped early on in the race.

Duffy showed a great sprint form and came across the line more than a bike length ahead of the third place finisher, Aida Jimenez of Puerto Rico.

The men's race of 125 kilometers was a brutal event that started after 11 in the morning on an 80 degree day and lasted more than three-and-a-half hours.

Garth Thomson was joined by team-mates Geri Mewett, Arthur Pitcher and Chris Faria, the latter two making their CCC debut.

The race opened with a long and steep climb that quickly sorted the field and saw Mewett and Thomson in the lead bunch with Faria and Pitcher left to chase, slowly working their way through the back half of the field.

In the front, Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana drove the pace with speeds of up to 50 miles per hour.

After the good start Bermuda's challenge started to fall away, Thomson was forced out with cramp, while Pitcher and Faria were pulled after the leaders lapped them, only Mewett survived till the end, and he eventually finished 11 after a break move failed.
