Teen puts Eagles on verge of Premiership
Somerset Eagles 3 –Young Men's Social Club 2
A late strike from super sub Daniel Andrade powered leaders Somerset Eagles to within a single victory of clinching the First Division title and promotion to the top tier next season.
The 16-year old Saltus Grammar School student beat Social Club 'keeper Chefton Hall in the 85th minute with a low drive at the near post to pull the plug on the visitors' spirited second-half revival that saw them erase a 2-0 deficit at White Hill Field yesterday.
With nearest rivals St. George's and St.David's both losing valuable ground on the leaders, Eagles can now wrap up the league title tomorrow night with victory over Prospect United at Devonshire Recreation Club.
The White Hill Club currently have 44 points which is the maximum second-placed St.David's and fourth-placed Somerset Trojans can gather from their remaining fixtures.
Eagles and Trojans also have a game-in-hand over St. David's.
The maximum amount of points St. George's, who also have a game in hand over the Islanders, can obtain from their final three league fixtures this season is 46.
After a lacklustre start, Eagles settled down in front of the home crowd and took a deserved lead on 25 minutes when forward Troy Tucker intercepted an intended back pass and chipped Hall from outside the box.
Skipper Danvers Seymour then doubled Eagles' lead eight-minutes later when he followed up on a rebound inside the penalty area and scrambled the ball across the line.
Social Club attacked with more purpose after the interval and got a lucky break in the 71st minute when Eagle's 'keeper Marcel Dill spilled a Shervin Jennings corner kick into his own net.
Dill's gift changed the complexion of the match and moments later the visitors were back on even terms when Andrew Samuels stabbed home a loose ball in the goalmouth as Eagles paid the price yet again for complacency.
But all Social Club's hard work went evaporated in the closing minutes as teenager Andrade cut in from the right and squeezed the ball inside Hall's near post.
Elsewhere poor finishing put a huge dent in Colts' promotion hopes as they lost 3-2 at Ireland Rangers yesterday.
Goals from Yusaff Pitt and Andre Outerbridge gave the home side a 2-0 lead at half time, and when Jonathan Bean added a third, following a Jarreau Hayward strike for St George's the game looked all but over at 3-1.
Jade Foggo set up a frantic finish with a goal 13 minutes from time, but Rangers held on for a well deserved win.
St George's only had themselves to blame for a game they should have won inside the first 15 minutes.
In that time Damon Darrell squandered four glorious opportunities when he only had the keeper to beat, but each time he managed to shoot wide when inside the area. He wasn't the only culprit however, with Hayward, Foggo and Gregory Wade all wasting chances.
Elsewhere a Dwight Basden goal kept Trojans in the hunt for automatic promotion, while goals from Uthamani Talbot and Gernell Darrell helped X-Roads come from behind to beat BAA 2-1 after the home side took the lead through Alton Roberts
