Tight at the top as four maintain unbeaten runs

A month in and it's tight at the top of the Corona League, with just five points seperating the top six teams.

Unbeaten Vasco currently occupy first place, but there are three other teams, Tuff Dogs, BAA Wanderers and Valley FC, who also have yet to lose and are hot on the heels of the league leaders.

With a month gone in the inaugural season, the table is starting to take shape, and a 6-3 thrashing of Prospect Fire last time out has firmly established Vasco as the team to beat.

Tuff Dogs though are the main goal threat, three points behind Vasco, but with a game in hand, Dogs' goal-difference of +18 is three better than that of the league leaders, and was given a timely boost with a 4-0 whipping of MR Onions on Friday night. John Payne grabbed a brace in the first half, while Lamaul Crofton scored his sixth in two games, and Robbie Almeida finished the job.

BAA had the toughest match of the week, eventually seeing off their heated rivals Robin Hood 5-2, in a game that was made far easier for Wanderers when Hood goalkeeper Randy Darrell was rushed to hospital after being kicked in the head by BAA's Oliver Tibbett in the opening five minutes.

Darrell was injured when he beat Tibbett to a ball on the floor, only for the striker to continue his challenge and catch Darrell in the face, fracturing his eye-socket and left checkbone. To add insult to injury, BAA continued to play as Darrell lay prone on the floor and Peter Coleman put the ball in the net, giving his side a controversial lead.

With defender Neil Towlson pressed into emergency goalkeeping duties, Hood were knocked out of their stride, and Wayne Clapham and Paul Colvin extended BAA's lead to 3-0 by half time.

A much more evenly contested second half saw Robin Hood get on top in the midfield and pull two goals back through a 30-yard strike from Nick Ingham and close range effort from JP Doughty to make it 3-2 and had it not been for a smart one-on-one save by Chris Hirst in the 75th minute, Hood would have been level.

However, as Hood pressed forward searching for the equaliser, Neil Churchill burst clear from the half way line and evaded three desperate tackles to slot smartly past the advancing Towlson in the Hood goal.

Martin Jones wrapped up the scoring for BAA, turning smartly inside the area in the dying minutes to give Wanderers all three points and derby day bragging rights.

Earlier, Friday night's double-header saw St. David's and Tuff Dogs win their matches in front of a packed house.

Cricketer Justin Pitcher put the Islanders up 1-0 in the first half when he slid his effort into the Lobster Pot net. Pot found a way back into the match through Mark Noah but was all in vain as another Pitcher goal, and a Rudell strike, wrapped up all three points.

Other results for the weekend included Valley FC holding off West End United 2-1, while Vasco dominated Prospect Fire 6-3 to keep pace with the Dogs scoring bonanza. No further information was available on these matches.
