Tight at the top as juniors compete for series title
The Odd Events track meet at the National Sports Centre this weekend could decide many of the prize-winners in this year's 2008 KPMG Junior Off-Road Running Series.
With several of the age groups closely contested and the current standings tight, the meet on Sunday will be crucial.
In the girls' 13-15 age group, three competitors – Kamryn Minors, Ravoshia Whaley and Shuntae Hendrickson – have the same number of points and can all clinch the top place with a victory this weekend.
However, Megan Berry, who ran the fastest two miles in the recent Bermuda Track Field Association (BTFA) cross-country race at the Arboretum, could also win the age group if she succeeds in the 3000 metres.
The Arboretum race saw the return of junior champion Trey Simons, a previous KPMG series and Front Street Mile winner, and he showed his strong form by running the fastest two miles, ahead of Juma Mouchette, Shawn Herman and Dage Minors.
Simons will now be a factor in the race for the 13-15 boys' title.
He recently returned from Cushing Academy in the USA where he was a member of the varsity cross-country team. His school won the New England Cross-Country Championship for the third successive year and Simons was the only freshman to finish in the top 15 in the meet.
Mouchette currently leads the division, having won the KPMG Around the Grounds race and taken second place at the Arboretum.
Herman and Minors are tied for second place.
In the girs' 11-12 group, Jordan Bascome and Kyrah Scraders are tied for first place, the latter having crossed the line first at the Arboretum.
Molly Doyle, who convincingly won the Around the Grounds event, can also win the group if she triumphs in the third and final event at the NSC.
The runaway successes of the series so far have been the boys in the two youngest age categories.
Justin Ferreira in the 11-12 group and Diondre Dowling in the eight-10 group both boast perfect scores going into the final race.
Ferreira covered the cross-country (1.88 miles) in 12 minutes, 50 seconds followed by Jaquan Burrows in 13:34.
Dowling was not far behind and finished in 13:48.
Burrows is tied with Nakeno Creighton for second place in the 11-12 age group.
With Dowling stretching his lead in the boys' eight-10 division, the battle will be between Treyshun Sanders, Merkell Smith and Charlie Keyes for second and third.
Smith finished second at the cross-country event in a time of 14:45, just two second ahead of Sanders.
The girl's eight-10 category has been the most popular this season with a large number of athletes completing the first two events of the series.
Tied for points are Zakiyyah Showers and Quaashie Douglas.
Showers won the Around the Grounds race and finished second to Douglas at the Arboretum. Douglas won in 14:38 with Showers stopping the clock at 14:42.
Anya Smith has finished third in both races. Other girls in contention are Erica Hawley and Quinnae Outerbridge.
Registration for the Odd Events meet will be at the NSC at 10:00 a.m.
Entry fee for both the 1500 metres (Under-13s) and 3000 metres (Over-13s) will be five dollars.
Pacers Track Club will organise the timing.
