Today is the deadline for players seeking a release from their club as the first step in the transfer process. Forms must be taken in to the Bermuda
player's present club. After obtaining the release players will then have until July 31 to re-register with a new team. There is also a late release period from August 1-15 and the late re-registration period is August 15-30 when all transfer activity will cease. Meanwhile, in an effort to upgrade the standard of youth soccer, a number of changes have been made to league rules.
They include the introduction of a Minor `B' Division, a team registration deadline of September 2, a transfer deadline of August 31 and, in keeping with FIFA competitions age groups will now be determined on January 1, 1994. Also, all players who play at Bantam and Premier levels must have a BFA ID card. No player can play more than once in a day.
TENNIS TEN Second seed Ricky Mallory's five year domination of the Pomander Gate Open Tennis Tournament comes under threat when the 1994 event gets underway at the Paget courts today.
Top seed in the men's singles is Michael Way who defeated Mallory in their last meeting -- the final of last month's Heineken Open.
Mallory hasn't been beaten in men's singles in the Pomander Gate tournament since 1988.
But top ladies' singles seed Donna Bradshaw boasts an even better record, having won six straight titles. A bumper entry of some 230 players has been confirmed for the tournament which winds up with finals on June 25 and 26.
VOLLEYBALL VOL Coolies outlasted Bud Light 8-11, 11-7, 11-1 to win the final of the Bud Light four-a-side Co-ed Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.
Seventeen teams participated in this year's tournament and after the round robin pool play the top eight teams moved on to the quarter-finals with the bottom eight teams participating in a consolation play-off.
In the quarter-finals `B' Sharps beat Nutty Buddies, Sand Kongs beat Second Waves, Bud Light got by Armadillos and Coolies defeated US Base II.
Semi-final action saw Bud Light overpower `B' Sharps 11-1, 11-3 and Coolies go three games before defeating Sand Kongs 6-11, 11-7, 11-5.
In the consolation semi-finals, US Base I beat Six Packs 11-5, 11-6 while BNTB Dragons got by Red Hot Chili Peppers 11-2, 11-8.
US Base I swept the final 11-0, 11-0 over BNTB Dragons.
FENCING FEN The Bermuda Amateur Fencing Association is inviting any beginners or experienced fencers to attend their first meeting on Monday, June 27 at the Officers Mess at Warwick Camp at 7 p.m. The meeting will be followed by a short demonstration.
