Top teams do battle in Dudley double-header

Defending Dudley Eve champions Dandy Town tackle cross-town rivals Devonshire Cougars tonight at the newly renovated BAA Field in the first match of a double-header featuring four of the Premier Division's top clubs.

Hornets have already qualified for the semi-finals having beaten Hamilton Parish 4-0 in last week's opening match of the competition and could decide to rest some of their key players.

For their opponents Cougars, tonight will mark their first match of the Dudley Eve competition and injured defender Omar Butterfield is confident his team can brush aside Hornets.

"Cougars are the best team on the Island and we've just got to go out there and prove it," he said. "We're missing a lot of key players at the moment but I don't think our performances have been bad."

Butterfield, who suffered a knee ligament injury in pre-season, is hoping to be back in contention for a first team start by the New Year.

"It's frustrating because I worked so hard to get myself fit in pre-season and then I got injured," he said. "I've just got to recuperate and keep patient."

Town will be looking to bounce back from a 3-2 defeat by Premier new boys Somerset Eagles on Sunday while Cougars should be confident after edging North Village 1-0 on Friday night.

In tonight's early kick-off (7 p.m.) Village will also be hoping to rebound that defat as they begin their Dudley Eve campaign against Boulevard.

Blazers, who beat Southampton Ranger 2-1 in Sunday's league action, need a win to guarantee a semi-final berth having drawn 1-1 against PHC in last week's Dudley Eve curtain call at Devonshire Rec.

Tomorrow night will see X-Roads play BAA at Somerset Cricket Club in a First Division match.
