defend his Gillette Tour Challenge title next year -- let the players wear shorts.

PGA Tour rules stipulate that golfers must wear long pants in all sanctioned events.

But for a one-day tournament such as the Challenge, veteran Trevino believes the rules could be bent.

"How come they don't let us wear shorts here? This is Bermuda isn't it?'' laughed the Merry Mex after yesterday's victory with team-mates Michelle McGann and Jim Furyk.

"I think they should make it mandatory next year for everybody to wear shorts. On a day like today we're wearing long pants...it's crazy.'' *** SHORTS apart, Trevino believes the three-Tour tournament is one of the best on the pro circuit.

"If you really look at it, Gillette have the biggest golf tournament in the world. They give $1.8 million for one day, those other people take four days to give that,'' he quipped.

"It's just great to be playing. Winning's a bonus,'' he added. "And the best part is we're invited back and we get to keep the same team. That's what's going to be wonderful.'' *** LONG-HITTERS John Daly and Laura Davies, playing together along with Walter Morgan, both felt their putting cost them a place in yesterday's play-off.

After a monster drive of more than 300 yards on the par four eighth which saw Davies' ball roll onto the green, the English LPGA star then three-putted.

And it was a similar story for Daly on the par five 11th after he crushed a drive around the dog leg and then clipped an eight iron onto the green where he too took three putts to get down.

"That pretty much cost us the tournament,'' said Daly. "We finished two back and those putts made all the difference.

"But otherwise we played well. It was great to play with Laura and Walter. I kinda wish it was a two-day tournament now.'' Added Davies: "I think those three-putts told the story. But we had a lot of fun.

"I like to watch John play as much as anyone else. I like to see him off the tee, that's fun for me as well.'' SHORTS GAME -- The effervescent Lee Trevino is leading the campaign for competitors in the Gillette Tour Challenge to be allowed to wear Bermuda shorts.
