Tributes pour in for talented sportsman

The loss of Machai Campbell struck right at the heart of the cricketing and footballing communities on the Island, and in the hours after the tragedy tributes poured in for the talented teenager.

Arnold Manders - Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) cricket development officer

"He was a good boy, he only started playing cricket seriously three years ago, but he was a hard worker and was coming on in leaps and bounds.

"He was a talented cricketer and footballer, he was serious about what he did, but he had a playful side as well.

"It's not very nice when a young boy goes, and an extremely good boy has been lost. He will be missed by all of us in the Under-19 programme and I am sure by Dandy Town as well.

"I know all the management and staff at the cricket board are upset."

Reggie Pearman - President of the BCB

"I am saddened to hear of the tragic death of promising young cricketer and Under-19 national player, Machai Campbell. On behalf of the Board and the local cricket fraternity, I would like to express our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones."

Scott Morton - Head coach of Dandy Town Hornets

"It's such a shock to lose a loved one. Machai was extremely likable, humble and dedicated and could have achieved whatever he wanted in life. Both his family and our club had high hopes for him.

"Obviously he was a very talented cricketer and had represented his country and he was also a solid defender for us, just like his father Wayne.

"The Dandy Town players are all in absolute disbelief and will hold a prayer for his family."

Andre Manders - Bermuda Under-19 national team coach

"I just can't believe it. To lose a player like Machai, it is surreal. I still can't believe it.

"I was at a funeral (on Tuesday morning) and missed 19 calls and knew that something was wrong but had no idea that it was him.

"I got a call from my brother (Arnold) to find out it was Machai and had to come straight home to be by myself because I still can't believe it.

"He was one of my mainstays in the Under 19's, not only that because he plays football as well.

"It is a tragedy to lose a player of his quality, it is very upsetting.

"He just came back from Argentina and my brother and myself were one of the people to push for him to go so he could get the experience at the next level as he was one of our leading players in the Under-19s and to come back and have this happen is very upsetting.

"I am trying to come to grips with this.

"We will definitely miss him. One thing that stands out for me is when we went to Ireland, it was our enthusiasm on the field that helped win the game.

"He was fielding on the boundary and had a ball come to him.

"He threw it to the wicketkeeper from the boundary to get the runout.

"That's the type of player he was, very athletic and we are all going to miss him very deeply."
