Tuff Dogs’ bark worse than their bite

MR Onions extended their lead at the top of the Commercial league after a 4-2 victory over Tuff Dogs in an entertaining encounter at St David's.

Onions took the lead with an Eoghan O'Dwyer strike, and thought that they had scored a second soon afterwards ¿ but failed to notice the linesman flagging for a handball in the build-up.

Undeterred Tuff Dogs continued to play neat football and were unfortunate to concede a second when O'Dwyer outmuscled the Dogs' keeper before showing great composure to lash home from a narrow angle.

The game saw a major flashpoint shortly before half time when both sides were reduced to 10 men ¿ an off-the-ball scuffle leaving the referee little option but to flash his red card to the two opposing midfielders involved ¿ Onions' Simon Gregory and Deunte Darrell of Tuff Dogs.

The Onions thought that they had made the game safe when Darragh O'Donoghue scored to make it 3-0, but credit should be given to Tuff Dogs who brought the score back to 3-2 thanks to late goals direct from a Chris Pett free kick and a Robert Marques penalty.

With the game then set up for a rousing finale, the Onions finally made the points safe when substitute Desmond Thomas raced clear from the half way line before coolly finishing.

Robin Hood were made to fight all the way at Bernard Park to secure a narrow victory over a feisty Key West Rangers. Twice, Hood took the lead in first half action, only to be pegged back instantly by Key West's fast break.

Hood opened with a well-worked move. A Justin Kempe long throw was flicked into the penalty area by Steven Simon's head and a trailing Teddy Terceira thumped a volley home. Immediately, Hood conceded a quickly taken throw in and Rangers took advantage of disarray in the Hood defence to slot home.

Hood's lead was restored just before the interval after David Wolffe's penetrative run into the box was brought to an abrupt end resulting in a penalty converted by top scorer, Steven Simons. Then the Hood defence fell asleep again for the same Rangers player to equalise yet again.

A duller second half was petering out before substitute, Kenan Robinson, popped up to score a winner for Hood's first win of 2009.

The East Enders started the match with no less then three veteran players aged 50 and over and more then held their own against a more youthful opposition. However the Peskies soon replied with a deserved equalizer from to complete the scoring in the half.
