TV deal has given the ISL a big boost

The Island Soccer League (ISL) has its second round of fixtures tonight and tomorrow night at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

With the news of a television deal recently announced and the season in full swing, ISL commissioner David Bascome feels the public is receiving the league quite well.

"I think from last year to this year it has been great. The public has supported us and has more awareness of not just the ISL but our substance and purpose.

"With getting the Fox Soccer deal it has brought great attention to the league not just here, but also in the USA.

"Fans will have a chance to support their team and also get to be on international television. Starting tomorrow night the ISL games would be putting together video clips of the games and atmosphere with fans and supporters.

"The Fox deal is to have the All-Star game on television, but we would have 30 minutes to cover from ISL in community, Hope for Life programme, youth programmes, sponsors and ISL supporters.

The first week's attendance was nothing short of surprising, with the seats being filled to almost full capacity. This is a welcoming sign for the Bascome.

"The attendances for the first two nights of action were very encouraging. We did not do much advertising for the first games because we wanted to get everybody on the same page first, from staff to volunteers to players.

"Now is the time when we must push everyone.

"Tuesday and Wednesday games will be the second set of games for the season and at this point each game will count for both teams and players alike.

"The teams want to be in the playoffs, so dropping any games will no be good for any of them.

"With the Fox deal, players will have to raise their standard of play. 30 players, which will include four goal keepers, will get selected to play in the All-Star game which would be on Fox.

"Players not only have to be performing on the field but their conduct off the field will be important.

"Off the field conduct will have just as great of a value to the selection as on field performances. This goes for referees, players, staff and coaches.

"With the new identity of jerseys and the ball that has been created, players would now develop pride in their teams and the league. "

Last season champions, Kings, get the ball rolling when they square off against the Union in the first match of a double-header at 7.15 pm, followed by Arsenal and the Royal at 8.45 pm.

Wednesday evening's fixtures will see Apex locking horns with the Storm in the opener, while the Knights and Titans get down to business in the second match.
