Unwanted Khano Smith is left in limbo

Khano Smith's career looks to be in limbo after he was not picked up by either of the MLS new-boys, Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps, in yesterday's Expansion Draft.

The league's two expansion teams for 2011 selected from a list of around 100 unprotected players, including Bermuda's Smith, as they build their squads ahead of their inaugural seasons.

Smith has not been protected by his club New England Revolution and, as he is now out of contract, could now leave them as a free agent if another club wanted to sign him.

The 29-year-old rejoined the Revolution this season – following a miserable spell at English League Two outfit Lincoln City – but barely made an impact.

He was left unprotected by the Revolution back in 2008 when he signed for, then, expansion team Seattle Sounders but never played a game for them before leaving to join New York Red Bull.

However, after only a handful of games for the Red Bulls Smith re-signed for Steve Nicol's Revolution where he had previously enjoyed a successful four seasons from 2005 to 2008 playing in two successive MLS Cup finals.
