Village aim for a flying start
This weekend's Charity Cup clash between PHC Zebras and North Village is, on paper at least, a potentially exciting match-up to kick off the domestic season.
League champions Zebras, given their dominance last season, will enter the game at BAA Field as favourites to claim the first piece of silverware this season.
Yet, their arch rivals for much of last season, Village, will be out to spoil another Zebras' party.
Village destroyed PHC's Triple Crown ambitions last season, trouncing the League and FA champions 7-3 on the back of skipper Ralph Bean Jr. and key marksman Keishen Bean hat-tricks at the National Sports Centre. And according to Village skipper, Bean, his side will look to put on a good show even though the real business is still sometime away.
"Whenever you have a healthy competitive attitude between two sides, the games will always be exciting," said Bean. "Last season we gave them a run in the league and beat them in the Friendship (Trophy). But on the flip side they knocked us out of the FA, so it will be an eventful night.
"Everyone wants to win. It's always nice to win a cup, no matter what it is and to also get off to a good start. But, at the same time, it is the first game of the season and we will be looking to see how far along we are in our preparation and what needs to be looked at.
"The result will be as important as at any other time, we will be looking for a victory; but it will give us an indication on how far along we have come."
Village have bolstered their ranks with a few important additions which could possibly carry them over the finish line after falling one point shy of league glory in the last campaign. In come former Wolves duo Jared Peniston and Vincent Minors Jr., who the skipper said would give much needed depth in key positions.
"With Jared and VJ coming in, they will add depth to our side in a couple key positions. In the past few seasons we have been a bit shallow at times with injuries and so forth. So these two will be a welcome addition and are fitting in well, which is also a good thing.
"In the end we are looking to win trophies. That's what we look for every season and what our fans expect from us. There are a few teams that have their seasons defined by how many trophies they get, so we will hopefully have a good season.
"Leading up to this season, I feel a lot of good things have happened to a lot of teams. They have picked up good players and made coaching changes so it will be interesting to see what happens.
"With a lot of good teams playing for only a handful of trophies, we will look to start our campaign with a trophy on Saturday and show people that we will be up in the running for all honours this season."
