We must be alert to danger of cup upset

This weekend will see the Premier Division teams enter the FA Challenge Cup and I've already warned my players about our potential 'banana-skin' against Commercial League side MR Onions.

I know they are a very organised and if we think that just because we're a top-flight club all we have to do is turn up, then we will get turned over, plain and simple. It's an important game for us and it's vital we continue our good run of late.

I must say I'm really enjoying myself as coach of North Village. It's been a challenge and I'm still in the process of introducing my players to new things that they're still taking onboard. But they're certainly putting in the hard work on the training ground and they're getting their rewards.

The biggest challenge was keeping training numbers high over Christmas, as it's always important to get numbers in the high teens if you want a meaningful training session.

For 20-years I had to make sacrifices as a professional footballer over the Christmas period.

Obviously Village's players are not professionals, and I have to understand that. But my players know that if they don't attend training they run the heavy risk of missing out on the first team squad come Sunday.

As far as I'm concerned I'd always take a player who is 100 percent committed over a player who is not fully committed, but may have more ability. As a coach you need to know that all of your players are committed to the cause on match day.

With Kyle Lightbourne and myself involved with our respective domestic clubs Paul Scope has been handling any pre-season Bermuda Hogges business. We haven't really been thinking about who will be on our roster just yet as we still have quite some time before the season starts.

As The Royal Gazette reported last week, the Hogges have held talks with Bermuda Football Association about several issues and they have agreed verbally to cover some of our costs for next season, with the Under-23 national team taking on our opponents during their stay on the Island. It's an interesting development and one that would be good for the local game.

My week has been tinged with a bit of disappointment with the news that Kaka will not be joining my former club Manchester City from AC Milan. I'm still in touch with people from City and it's obvious something has gone on.

It makes you wonder about Robinho's early exit from our training camp in Tenerife as well.

They're both Brazilian internationals and Kaka would have talked to Robinho about City, the coach, their training methods, and the dressing room atmosphere etc.

I think the problem at the moment is that expectation levels have gone through the roof because we now have a rich owner, not because of our performances on the pitch.

The players have struggled to cope with the new expectation and that's the balance the club needs to find.

We have brought in Craig Bellamy from West Ham and he's a striker who has plenty of pace who Mark Hughes will know very well from his time as coach of Wales and Blackburn Rovers. The only concern with Bellamy is his goals-to-games ratio. Hopefully he can improve that during his time at City.
