Work comes first for the champions in-waiting

Baring a series of improbable events Devonshire Cougars will be crowned Premier Division champions after their last game of the season against North Village Rams tomorrow.

Devar Boyles' side effectively wrapped up the title with a 2-1 win over PHC Zebras last weekend, and while it is mathematically possible for them to lose, it is highly unlikely.

Only Dandy Town can catch them, but with a far superior goal difference, Cougars would have to lose heavily while Town would have to hammer Boulevard Blazers by a wide margain.

The only thing that could threaten to spoil Cougars' party therefore would be their own complacency, and that's something that Boyles has vowed will not happen.

"It has been very, very easy to get the players to focus on what we have to do," said Boyles.

"It is just another game for us. We have 30 points at the moment and we want to extend that because next year there are going to be more teams and it will take more points to win the league.

"We need to score first because that will be important psychologically for us. The first goal would calm us down, allow us to focus on the game.

"In the last two games we have ended up winning, but we could have just as easily lost and it would have cost us the league."

Beating PHC all but guaranteed Cougars the title but the game could have easily gone the other way and only a last-gasp penalty save from Ricardo Brangman stopped Zebras grabbing a draw.

"We could have been on the losing side," said Boyles. "But I'm very, very thankful for the effort the players put in, they stayed focused when it mattered and put themselves in a position to win, as they have done all season.

"It's all about momentum, away from home we have won six out of seven games, so we need to carry that into our home form.

"It's all about focus, we need to do what we normally do, and hopefully we will get what we normally get."

In the First Division, Somerset Eagles have already won the championship and tomorrow all eyes will be on the fight to finish second and third.

As it stands, St David's are currently in second spot three points ahead of Somerset Trojans.

However they have already finished their season and the two sides are level on goal difference (plus-29).

Quite simply, if Somerset Trojans beat Ireland Rangers, they will finish second, and St David's will finish third.

Rangers though are no pushovers, and with St George's Colts only a point behind Tojans, a draw might see them fall out of the top three altogether.

Colts play Paget tomorrow, knowing they must win to give themselves any chance of finishing third and going into a play-off against Devonshire Colts for the right to play in the Premier Division.
