Young golfer Jones shines on pro debut
Nick Jones has made an encouraging start to his professional golf career, carding a two-under 70 to finish tied for sixth place in the Moonlight Golf Tour event at Falcon's Fire GC in Orlando, Florida.
Jones reeled off four birdies in the final five holes to move up the leaderboard having been at two-over at the 13th.
Roger Rowland won the event with seven-under 65 while Yohann Benson finished one shot back (66).
Jones admitted to having been challenged on his pro debut and put his fighting finish down to a 'swing thought' at the 13th hole.
"I had a swing thought around the 13th hole after I had gone to two-over and then birdied the four of the last five holes to finish strong," said Jones. "It felt good to swing well after the early problems I was having.
"The front nine I was hitting the ball too far to the right and not having enough accuracy to get myself out of the holes I was digging for myself in.
"I made a little adjustment with my hips and from that point I was hitting the ball really well."
The Bermuda golfer decided to turn professional after winning a major amateur event in the US last month and has now focused all his energies on getting ready for the PGA Tour Q-School in 2011.
Jones, son of local pro Eardley Jones, came from four shots back to win the Golf Channel AM Tour's second major championship of the year.
Acknowledging the difference between the pro and amateur levels, Jones will now shift gears in his preparation for the upcoming Belmont Invitational on home soil while continuing to play on tours in Florida.
"The scores between the two levels is the biggest difference. Seven under for one round is incredible but even the pressure and the different class of players around you is totally different, and you can feel this on the first tee box.
"I will continue to play mini-tour events but this is all leading up to the Belmont Invitational, which is a big tournament for me."
