Bermudian trio make the finals
Bermuda's Robbie Maycock, Noah Browne and Emma Keane qualified for the finals of the Junior CASA Squash Championships at the Bermuda Squash and Racquets Club, in Devonshire.
The teenage trio were yesterday scheduled to play for the right to be called the best in their respective age groups.
In the Girls Under-13 category, Bermuda's number two seed, Emma Keane, kept local squash fans on the edge of their seats as she lost her first game of her semi-final against a physically stronger Mary Mahfood, of Jamaica, at the weekend.
But Keane kept her cool and fought back to take the next three games 9-4, 9-1,10-8.
She was due to face the number one seed Victoria Arjoon, of Guyana, in the final after Arjoon defeated Charlotte Knaggs, of Trinidad and Tobago, dropping just one point.
Bermuda's number two seed Browne dominated Mandela Patrick in straight games in the Boys' Under-15 category. He was scheduled for a tough match against number one seed Kevan Hannaway of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
The Island's only number one seed in the championships, Maycock, played Bruce Burrowes, of Jamaica, in his semi-final in the Boys' Under-19s. Maycock cruised through in straight games.
But Bermuda's hopes in the Boys' Under-13s were dashed when D'Vario Thompson lost to Jake Mahfood, of Jamaica.
The Guyana team have triumphed as overall champions in the Junior CASA's for the past two years. This year they have continued to dominate with no less than four of their girls reaching the individual finals.
Squash spokesman Roger Sherratt said he was thrilled about the level of play seen at the tournament.
"The standard of squash in these championships continues to improve and we've witnessed some outstanding matches in the semi-finals," said Sherratt.
"It's a great achievement for Bermuda to have three players in the finals, competing for their age group's coveted titles."
