Colts 'good enough' to beat the drop

Keishon Smith has reflected on Devonshire Colts' "valuable" win over Somerset Eagles and insists they have enough ability in their dressing room to beat the drop this season.

Colts leapfrogged ahead of Hamilton Parish after beating Eagles 3-2 at Police Field on Sunday to haul themselves off the bottom of the Premier Division table, thanks to a brace from rookie striker Andre Famous.

And Smith, who also coaches Knights in the Island Soccer League (ISL), believes his team have a fighting chance of avoiding relegation now they are becoming more clinical in front of goal.

"We picked up a very valuable three points," he said. "Three points are very hard to come by in this league as it's so tight. It's another step in the right direction for us and nudges us a bit closer to where we want to go.

"It was an excellent performance against Eagles, probably our best of the season. The difference was we managed to convert the chances we created and scored early on, that settled us down."

Without the goal threat of ex-Bermuda international Aljame Zuill, who is still recovering from a groin strain, Colts have struggled to hit the net this campaign, scoring a paltry five goals all season – less than any other team.

Four of those have come from Famous who has been backed by Smith to form a formidable partnership with Zuill, who could make his much-needed return this weekend.

"We've been missing Aljame Zuill all season and he's a striker that's capable of scoring 20 goals for you – that's a lot of goals to make up," Smith said. "We want to get as many points as possible before Aljame returns from injury, so to take the pressure off him.

"But Andre Famous has started scoring and when he does he tends to score two a game. The more goals he scores the more confidence he will have and I have a lot of belief in him.

"So far we've beaten PHC and Somerset Eagles and that should give the players belief that we can go and get points off teams this season."
