Colts no longer jokers in the pack

A relieved Keishon Smith has confessed he had become " tired of taking licks" and revealed his players' had even been the brunt of jokes at local barbershops.

But Andre Famous' razor sharp finishing ensured Colts were a cut above on Sunday with his brace sinking PHC at Police Field, ending his team's miserable year-long winless streak in league football.

Rookie coach Smith now hopes Colts can finally move on following their long overdue win which he believes will give his players belief and confidence in their fight against relegation.

"We're tired of taking licks, it gets to a point where you have to fight back and hopefully with that experience behind us we can carry on," said Smith, whose team survived the drop last season by beating St.David's in the Premier Division play-off.

"Players on my team were talking about going to the barber shop before the weekend and taking flack but it's over now and we can move on.

"I felt we went to the match with the complete atttitude. Once you get a win in your system you want to win and I hope this inspires us. We didn't really celebrate, we won a game but it was going to come sooner or later and we're one step closer in the right direction."

Despite their nightmare run, Smith insists morale had always remained high in the dressing room and reckons his team's results haven't always been a fair reflection of their performances.

But a lack of fire power in front of goal in the absence of talisman Aljame Zuill has been cause of concern for Smith, who will be hoping Famous' scoring appetite will be whetted by his double against Zebras.

"I look at things like this; I have a lot of guys training every session so we have been losing and still have good numbers coming out which shows me we're progressing," Smith said.

"When you look at a team that goes a whole season without a win, most times you would find the team in disarray but we still had guys out training and during the off months we didn't lose anyone.

"We have a lot of guys that are ready to learn and listen to what is being said but our problem has been that can't seem to score goals.

"Not being able to score goals means my team doesn't get to see their full potential because all the games we've played has seen us create good chances but having only one or two players who can find the net is the situation we are dealing with."

Colts win couldn't have come at a better time considering they face arch-rivals Cougars in the Devonshire derby at the Rec. on Thursday night.

And Smith has urged his team to dethrone the defending champions as the 'Kings of Devonshire'.

"Not too long ago we were in their shoes as the top dogs, the Kings of Devonshire with a team like Jermiane and Quincy Aberdeen, myself and Marvin Belboda," he said.

"We're playing the defending champions we will pay them respect, whether or not other teams do that to us will not affect us."
